The latest Legend to join the Apex Legends roster is Valkyrie, the daughter of Titanfall 2 mercenary and Titan pilot Viper. As shown in the latest Stories from the Outlands lore video, Valkyrie joins the Apex Games with a Northstar-themed kit thanks to some help from Rampart and her modding abilities.

Recently, many of the developers at Respawn Entertainment have been teasing the theme of Season 9 and the new Legend, saying that Japanese Apex Legends fans and Titanfall fans would be happy with the new additions to the game. With Season 8 of Apex Legends reaching its final weeks, more teasers and trailers for Valkyrie and Season 9 will follow before it begins on May 4.

According to a small lore entry on the Apex Legends website, Kairi Imahara, better known by her callsign Valkyrie, grew up in the shadow of her father, Viper, and is stepping into the Apex Games to forge her own legacy. The new Stories from the Outlands video revealed that, from a young age, she was a skilled Northstar Titan pilot but was warned against ever becoming a professional pilot by her father. Now grown up, Valkyrie has been working as a smuggling pilot to eventually confront Blisk for answers about Viper’s death, but instead she was persuaded to join the Apex Games.

While the lore video showed little official information regarding Valkyrie’s abilities, the end of the video and some new artwork on the Apex Legends website show her with a winged jetpack with missile launchers. Any Apex Legends fan not caught up with Titanfall 2 should know that Viper was one of the boss fights in the campaign. He piloted the fragile but extremely maneuverable Northstar Titan, which could fly and came equipped with missile pods, tethering traps, and a railgun in the game’s multiplayer modes.

The prominence of Valkyrie’s jetpack and missiles in the video and artwork obviously means that they will form a part of her abilities but the extent of which is unknown. A brief clip at the end of Apex Legends' recent 100 million player celebration video, clearly shows Valkyrie flying around so her Tactical ability could be her jetpack, with her Ultimate ability being a mini version of Northstar’s Flight Core ability, which allowed the Titan to hover for a short time while releasing a steady bombardment of missiles.

Season 9 appears to be introducing some big changes to Apex Legends. Not only because of an updated map, new weapon, and new Legend, but lots of other Legends will be receiving balance changes such as Horizon. Given that Valkyrie’s jetpack could be an integral part of her kit, Respawn may need to avoid another similar situation as with Horizon, where high-mobility Legends prove to be far too dominant and need reining in.

Apex Legends is available now on PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
