Although it has been live for less than a year now, Apex Legends Mobile is being shut down by Electronic Arts and Respawn Entertainment. Apex Legends has maintained popularity across multiple platforms since it was originally released in 2019, but Apex Legends Mobile has seemingly failed to gain the traction that EA and Respawn may have expected.

EA and Respawn Entertainment released a statement regarding Apex Legends Mobile today that bodes poorly for the mobile FPS as it confirms the upcoming closure of the game. Apex Legends Mobile was announced alongside a Nintendo Switch pro for Apex Legends which has garnered some attention from Nintendo fans that still don't have access to popular battle royale games like PUBG or Call of Duty: Warzone 2. Though the Nintendo Switch port is expected to remain on the platform for the foreseeable future, the mobile version has been cut to put the development resources elsewhere.

Respawn Entertainment has confirmed that Apex Legends Mobile will be shut down on May 1, 2023, which leaves fans of the mobile version of Apex Legends only 90 days to get their final drops in. Apex Legends Mobile will go offline at 1:00 PM PT, but all in-app purchases have been disabled as of today in preparation for the conclusion. According to Respawn, development on Apex Legends Mobile is being halted because the content pipeline for the mobile battle royale no longer fits their "quality, quantity, and cadence" standards.

Apex Legends Mobile Crypto

Similar to other versions of Apex Legends, players could buy cosmetics through microtransactions in Apex Legends Mobile, but those cosmetics may not be refundable. Respawn Entertainment has confirmed through an FAQ that all purchases will remain on an Apex Legends Mobile account until May 1, but players looking for a refund will have to contact the Apple App Store or Google Play Store. The Respawn Entertainment statement also suggested that the developer is looking at other ways to approach mobile in the future, which may hint at a future announcement.

The launch of Apex Legends Mobile was met with some positivity as a portion of the community had already been anticipating the readily available version, but it may have since plummeted in engagement given the game's closure. Like other live service titles such asTitanfall or Anthem, Apex Legends may avoid any legal issues regarding the microtransactions that are lost by players once the game goes offline because of the terms of the EA User Agreement which players need to sign before playing the battle royale.

Apex Legends is available now for mobile, Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
