Apex Legends has only been out for a few days, but already there has been talk about cross-play, which would allow gamers on PC, PS4, and Xbox One to all play the game together. However, one potential hurdle to cross-play working effectively in Apex Legends has been discovered, as a report by Digital Foundry has indicated that those playing it on a standard Xbox One may be at a disadvantage when compared to other players.

According to the Digital Foundry report, Apex Legends consistently aims for 60 frames per second across all consoles, hitting that target most often on Xbox One X. When it comes to the standard Xbox One version of the game, though, Apex Legends' frames per second can drop into the 40 range, which may put players on that console at a disadvantage compared to players with stable and faster frame rates.

This discrepancy is one of the arguments against cross-play. Another reason that's often cited among those who are against cross-play is that players with certain control schemes may have an advantage over others, like keyboard and mouse players on PC playing a first-person shooter versus those using a console controller.

Of course, if cross-play is made an option as opposed to forcing everyone to opt in, then there's nothing wrong with it. Furthermore, it's worth pointing out that those playing on a standard Xbox One would be at a disadvantage when playing against Xbox One X owners according to Digital Foundry's report, so they are already experiencing that disadvantage anyway.

It's unclear why Apex Legends doesn't run quite as well on standard Xbox One consoles, but perhaps Respawn will address it in the future. It seems the company has some big plans for the free-to-play battle royale game, with leaks suggesting new game modes could be added in addition to potential fixes and ironing out any lingering bugs.

If Respawn is able to regularly deliver new content updates and fix any problems that arise, it's easy to see how Apex Legends will remain one of the top battle royale games in the months to come.

Apex Legends is out now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
