In the latest battle royale game to hit the playing field, Apex Legends, players get to choose from eight different legends. That said, two of them are locked at first, namely Caustic and Mirage, meaning players will either need to fork out some real-world cash to unlock them or spend some serious time with Respawn's latest release. Up front, the cost to unlock either of these Legends is 12,000 Legend Tokens or 750 Apex Coins.

For the uninitiated, the Apex Coins are the premium in-game currency for Apex Legends, much like Fortnite's V-Bucks or Black Ops 4's COD points. These are the most direct way to unlock the two legends, as players can purchase 1,000 coins, 2,000 coins (+150 Bonus), 4,000 coins (+350 Bonus), 6,000 coins (+750 Bonus), or 10,000 coins (+1,500 Bonus) for $10, $20, $40, $60, and $100, respectively.

Of course, while this is the quickest way, some players are likely averse to spending money on a battle royale game. Luckily, Apex Legends has that covered, as Legend Tokens can be unlocked simply by playing the game and leveling up. So roughly speaking, players can earn enough of this currency to unlock the first legend around level 23. The time it takes to reach this level can vary player to player, but the average time seems to be around 17-20 hours, with a multitude of players needing this time to adapt to the battle royale map.

The next character can take double that, if not more, to unlock. Legend Token rewards decrease after level 20, but that may also be due to the climbing experience requirements to level up. Either way, Apex Legends players cannot seemingly go wrong with either Mirage or Caustic, considering some have discovered the latter's Nox Gas ability can be used as a trap.

All things considered, these characters seem to be well worth the grind. Combining these characters' ultimates with a few other new twists on the battle royale genre, it may very well seem like Respawn is on to something with Apex Legends. Whether that something proves to be as popular as Fortnite or other BR competitors remains to be seen, but the game has been growing rapidly.

Apex Legends is out now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
