Apex Legends is a free-to-play game, and it aims to make its money primarily through microtransactions. More specifically, Apex Legends uses the controversial loot box system to make its cash, locking many of the cosmetics behind loot boxes. While Apex Legends doles out loot boxes at a decent pace to players, some may still be disappointed to learn that they're the only way to unlock one of the most coveted items in the game, Wraith's Heirloom knife.

Wraith's Heirloom knife is called the Kunai, and at the time of this writing, it can only be unlocked through loot boxes, unlike some other cosmetics that can be crafted using crafting metals. Players can earn loot boxes by leveling up in the game, and they can also get some by buying them using Apex Legends' microtransactions. So basically, to get Wraith's knife in Apex Legends, players just have to be very lucky with loot boxes.

There is a bright side to this, though, and that is players are guaranteed at least one Heirloom loot box out of every 500 that they open. This means that if players opened 499 loot boxes in Apex Legends, the next one would be guaranteed to contain Heirloom-level items. Right now Wraith is the only character with Heirloom items, but fans should be able to expect more characters to get some extra special cosmetics in future updates.

With Apex Legends passing 25 million players worldwide, it's clear that Respawn Entertainment has a major hit on its hands, and there's no way it's going to stop supporting the game. In fact, fans should be able to expect Respawn to be rather aggressive with its Apex Legends updates, especially as it is currently on pace to surpass Fortnite's popularity if it is able to keep its momentum.

Besides new cosmetics, Apex Legends fans can expect Respawn to add more substantial content to the game as well. Next month will see the release of the first Apex Legends battle pass, which is expected to bring with it special rewards and specific challenges, not unlike the battle pass seen in Fortnite. The first "season" of content will also be kicking off to coincide with the battle pass's release in March, and it will be interesting to see if any new Heirloom items will be part of the festivities.

Apex Legends is out now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
