Apex Legends' 12th Season update is right around the corner, dropping for all players on February 8. While most Apex Legends updates bring a decent supply of new content to the game, Season 12, titled "Defiance," is bringing a lot to the table. Defiance is adding a time-limited game mode, a reworked map, a whole range of new cosmetics, and is adding a brand-new Legend to the game.

Along with all of this, Apex Legends Defiance update is also celebrating the game's third anniversary, bringing the Anniversary Collection event back to the game for a limited time, allowing players to unlock a range of exclusive legendary character skins. Players are also being given three Legends - Octane, Valkyrie, and Wattson - for free to mark the game's anniversary.

Defiance Has a Time-Limited Game Mode

Defiance is bringing a brand-new game mode to Apex Legends. Titled "Control," this game mode functions similarly to Halo Infinite's "Stronghold" mode, pitting two teams of nine against one another. The game mode tasks teams with holding a series of objectives scattered across the map, with the match coming to a close once players have reached 1500 points. As opposed to Apex's usual respawn timer, Control allows players to respawn almost-immediately.

Defiance's Control mode is time-limited, however, only being playable for the first three weeks of Season 12. Players will need to make sure they log in during the first three weeks to hop into the new mode.

Defiance Features a Reworked Map

Defiance is also bringing a reworked version of the "Olympus" map. The tweaked map, named "Sabotaged Olympus," takes the game's third map and plummets it into the ground. Following the titular sabotage from brand-new legend Mad Maggie, players will need to get to grips with the relocated landmarks of the Olympus map, which have been phase-shifted throughout the stage.

As is the case with every new Apex Legends season, Defiance is brining a new battle pass to the game. As previous battle passes have done, Defiance's will give players the opportunity to unlock two new legendary character skins, one for Loba, and a pretty intriguing one for Bloodhound.

The Bloodhound skin is shown very briefly at the end of the Season 12 gameplay trailer, but eagle-eyed fans have noticed that the skin seems to evolve during the course of a game, changing with each new kill and win. This evolution eventually unlocks a brutal execution for the Legend. This marks the first time Apex Legends has included a reactive skin like this. The new battle pass also offers a legendary Hemlock skin, and over 100 cosmetics for the rest of the game's cast.

Defiance Adds a New Legend

One of the most persistent rumors about Season 12 has turned out to be true, as Mad Maggie is Apex Legends' newest playable character. Personality-wise, Maggie is stubborn and ferocious, and is definitely one of Apex's more morally-gray Legends.

From a gameplay standpoint, Maggie looks like she'll be a great new addition to Apex's more offensive Legends, with abilities that compliment an aggressive play-style. Her passive ability named "Warlord's Ire," highlights those she has hit and allows her to move faster when wielding a shotgun. Maggie's tactical ability, "Riot Drill," allows her to fire a drill that passes through obstacles and burns any enemies hiding in cover.

Maggie's ultimate ability, named "Wrecking Ball," launches a ball that explodes upon impact. While the ball is moving, it drops speed pads behind it, giving teammates a boost. Players are sure to have a lot of fun with this Apex Legends ultimate, as it gives them both an AoE attack and a boost that's extremely helpful for offensive players.

Apex Legends' Defiance update releases February 8 for PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
