It looks like Apex Legends players are going to be getting a new playable character sooner rather than later, and it looks like that character will be the frequently-leaked Apex Legends hacker Crypto. This week, the strongest evidence of his imminent arrival to date has been discovered, because it was found inside the game itself.
Respawn Entertainment has been subtly teasing Crypto’s inclusion for the last few months, ever since the start of Apex Legends Season 2 where the opening trailer suggested he’s to blame for the destruction of Kings Canyon’s Repulsor tower and the influx of monsters on the game’s map that followed. Of course, the leaks have helped build up hype for the character throughout the season. This has culminated in a discovery of Crypto actually making an in-game appearance, giving Apex fans their first look at the hacker in motion.
As shared by Reddit user FrozenFroh, Crypto was found deep inside Singh Labs in the Nesting Grounds area of Kings Canyon. Inside, there’s a doorway that’s covered in debris, from which the sound of someone typing can be heard. Getting around that debris leads to a window through which Crypto can be seen hacking away at a computer terminal until his surveillance drone companion notices the player watching and they both flee down a dark hallway.
It didn’t take long for this cameo to make it to the front page of the Apex Legends subreddit, and on top of that, some of Respawn’s developers have responded to the footage of Crypto’s appearance. Interestingly, though, they have been playing coy with fans, with one merely asking “Who?” while another jokingly suggested that “Crypto” is actually just a reference to bitcoin mining software.
So it looks like Respawn is ready to openly acknowledge Crypto’s existence but not yet ready to spill the details. As it is, the studio is still holding off on revealing the specifics for the next wave of Apex content. However, Season 3 of Apex Legends is expected to arrive sometime in October, and at this point it’s highly likely that Crypto will be the hero added to the playable roster during this time. If that turns out to be the case, fans won’t have to wait too much longer to get their hands on him.
Whenever he does arrive, Crypto will be just the first of Apex Legends' lineup of leaked characters to make their way into the game. Respawn has yet to say anything about the rest of these characters, joking or otherwise, so it’s safe to assume that players won’t be seeing any of them until Season 4 at the earliest.
Apex Legends is free-to-play on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
