Apex Legends, like many BR games, is about more than just guns. While getting to understand everything from the R-99 to the new Rampage is important, players have to know how to counter legends, rotate, get the jump on others, use abilities, and toss in well-timed grenades. All of this is important to being successful in Apex Legends, with the latter being perhaps one of the hardest.

Whether it's sticking an enemy with the arc star, killing them with a grenade, or trapping them right where thermite grenades are, getting good with grenades isn't easy, but it is worthwhile. Now, however, it seems a new grenade, a cryo grenade specifically, is coming to Apex Legends with more potential than the other three.

Apex Legends' Datamined Cryo Grenade

Well-known dataminer Shrugtal recently discussed this grenade in the above video, and it should be noted that the cryo grenade is likely a couple of Apex Legends seasons away. However, based on Shrugtal's information, it sounds like the cryo grenade could be OP in the best of ways. There is a "freeze progression" track associate with the game, and while it's unlikely to completely free enemies, it'll likely hit them with the same type of slow that an arc star or any number of characters' tacticals can do.

However, by making this a radial area of effect from a grenade, it could seriously impact any major in-game push for better or worse. If in one of the buildings in Apex Legends' Fragment East or West, for example, a cryo grenade or two could likely prevent a push by freezing the area. In the best case scenario, it could even be timed to freeze enemies as they begin their push, allowing for easy kills. At the same time, it could be thrown into a building to slow the other enemies and make a push go that much faster. While its offensive abilities could be on par with other grenades, the defense ability is the most noteworthy.

Apex Legends is a game about a lot of things, like learning grenades, but movement, placement, and speed are up there too. A well-timed cryo grenade either has the potential to hold that off, as some teams would think twice about trying to push through the freeze, or to speed that up. In fact, it's a perfect fit for the current Apex Legends meta, as it captures all of it in a unique and challenging way.

Apex Legends is available now for PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One. Mobile, PS5, and Xbox Series X versions are in development.
