Season 2 of Apex Legends is coming to a close, with season 3: Meltdown set to begin on October 1. Season 2 saw the likes of the Iron Crown Collection Event and the Voidwalker Event, leaving many hoping that season 3 can follow up on delivering more and more content for the game. Already, players know about the new character Crypto and a new weapon, but a recent data mine suggests that cross-play and cross progression could also be coming soon, perhaps some time in season 3.

This information comes way of That1MiningGuy who has leaked reliable information, as well as a ton of character details, in the past. According to him, Apex Legends has added 'nucleus' strings to its code, with there being matchmaking descriptions for PC, PS4, and Xbox One. This would indicate little other than crossplay, which would likely be a welcome feature. As always with this type of stuff, others would likely worry about playing against mouse and keyboard users, but it seems likely that developer Respawn Entertainment has taken that into account.

Cross progression also appears to be coming to Apex Legends, as the data miner points out the interesting use of PINs, information that can be used to track a single player across platforms. Considering its primary competitor, Fortnite, has crossplay and cross progression, it would make sense for this game to as well, especially given that it has aired support for it practically since its initial launch.

Unfortunately, what this leak doesn't suggest is when these features could come to the popular battle royale title. Crossplay and cross progression are complicated systems, so while it appears they are being worked on, that doesn't mean it'll happen quickly. Prior to the end of Apex Legends season 3: Meltdown would make the season itself stand out, but there's no way to know for sure.

While that may be disappointing, Apex Legends players will be diving into a changed map with a new character and new season 3 Battle Pass rewards in just a few days. If season 3 continues the evolving trend of season 2, then hopefully, it'll keep players coming back.

Apex Legends is out now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
