Apex Legends' character meta shifts every season. While there are characters like Octane and Wraith who never falter and characters who struggle to climb the ranks like Crypto, it's easy to see how the intensive changes with every seasonal release change engagements. However, it seems like the upcoming Apex Legends character Catalyst may change it in different ways.

The simplest description of Catalyst is she is a zoning defensive legend like Caustic or Wattson, but unlike them, Catalyst's abilities have the potential to reshape a battle. Catalyst's Apex Legends abilities include her passive of reinforcing doors, her tactical of laying down traps that slow and damage enemies, and her ultimate of summoning a giant wall that slows and partially blinds enemies who move through it, while blocking scans entirely. Her ultimate in particular changes the battlefield and paired with movement or strong assault characters can put enemies in a major bind. They have few options to counter, though one character stands out the most. Game Rant recently attended a preview event where her abilities were discussed and how she synergizes or could be countered by others.

Apex Legends' Catalyst Makes Her Best Counter Even Better

No legend has flawless abilities. Catalyst's passive can be destroyed, her tactical requires players to move through it (unless she manages to hit their area when launching it), and players can go over (Horizon can go over it, for example) or around her wall. However, this is situational and Catalyst's zoning abilities are more universal. This makes one character who can counter her effectively stand out even more: Mad Maggie.

Mad Maggie dropped in the Apex pick charts pretty roughly and pretty quickly, but recent buffs have carved her out a specific niche: the best counter in the game. Her Riot Drill can pierce defenses, but when Respawn gave her Wrecking Ball the ability to destroy placeable objects, her niche spiked. Mad Maggie is a perfect counter to the popular Gibraltar bubble meta, and this transfers to Catalyst too. If Catalyst reinforces a door, Mad Maggie's Riot Drill still works. Catalyst's Ultimate can be destroyed by Mad Maggie's Ultimate. It's almost a perfect match-up between how Maggie can counter abilities and how Catalyst's abilities combine a lot of elements.

The one thing that is questionable right now is Catalyst's tactical in Apex Legends. It comes with a special property that prevents it from being sniped from afar - for someone to damage it, they have to be close to it. Since the Wrecking Ball can be fired from further away, it's uncertain if Catalyst's traps counter that or if its special property cancels hers out. No matter what though, it seems like a safe bet that Mad Maggie's popularity will continue to rise, even as Catalyst's does with the launch of the new season.

Apex Legends is available now for Mobile, PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
