Video games that have earned companies over one billion dollars are often called the best games of all time, and the ever popular Apex Legends is on track to make a billion for EA by March 31, 2021, the end of the current fiscal year. Apex Legends' constant and growing popularity can be compared to some of EA’s other large online franchises such as The Sims and the FIFA series, which are series that have been around for a much longer period of time.

For EA and its many studios, it is not individual game sales that bring in the most money for the company. In a financial report released by EA, the company shows that a large part of its success is due to live services, which includes games like Apex Legends which is reworked on a constant and regular basis.

In Quarter 2 of the Fiscal Year 2021, EA made around $1.15 billion. Of that $1.15 billion, $282 came from individual game sales from all of the games that the company has released. But from online services, which includes online games such as Apex Legends, EA made a whopping $869 million. Online games tend to have longer player retention and with new content constantly coming out, players will spend more time and money on games that have consistent updates.

Because of how well Apex Legends has done since it released in early 2019, EA COO and CFO Blake Jorgensen fully expects that the game will become a billion dollar game franchise within the next six months. Apex Legends has grown in such an exponential rate that the game has completely surpassed Madden Ultimate Team, a service that is similar to daily fantasy sports contests.

Looking around on websites such as Twitch, it is easy to see why Apex Legends is on the path to become a billion dollar franchise. New games often cycle in and out of the top of the browse directory on Twitch, but Apex Legends is constantly on the top of Twitch categories which is seen by nearly a million users a day. With that much constant exposure and the consistent updates for Apex Legends, it becomes easier to see why Apex Legends continues to grow and is well on the path to make a billion dollars for EA.

With Season 7 of Apex Legends out now, there is more for players to discover in the game and a reason to keep on playing the ever-popular battle royale. Players might have to relearn characters due to character buffs and nerfs, but such changes are part of the reason why Apex Legends continues to be popular.

Apex Legends is available on PC, PS4, and Xbox One with a Nintendo Switch version in development.
