There's no denying that Fortnite is one of the biggest, if not the biggest, video game that's currently available. However, it now has a serious challenger to its throne as the top battle royale game in the form of Apex Legends from Respawn Entertainment, which has taken the gaming world by storm since its surprise launch last Monday. And as it turns out, Apex Legends is actually on pace to become bigger than Fortnite if it is able to keep its momentum.

As announced by Respawn, Apex Legends hit 25 million players just one week after the servers went live, and has had around 2 million concurrent players. This puts it ahead of Fortnite's numbers at the same time in its lifespan, as pointed out by analyst Thomas Rice. According to Rice, it took Fortnite 41 days to hit the 20 million mark, so Apex seems to be growing at a much faster rate.

Of course, it's possible Apex Legends' growth will slow, but as of this writing, the game is showing no signs of slowing down. It's become a huge hit with fans and on Twitch, and seems poised to be the next big thing in gaming. Of course, some of this is going to be dependent on whether or not Respawn is able to keep Apex Legends supported with regular content updates and special events to keep fans hooked, as we've seen Epic Games do with Fortnite.

And as it turns out, Respawn has big plans to support Apex Legends in the future. Next month, fans can look forward to Apex Legends launching its first battle pass and first official "season" of content. It remains to be seen exactly what Apex Legends' first season will entail, but it will be exciting to see what Respawn delivers.

However, Apex Legends does have one key factor working against it becoming bigger than Fortnite and that is the fact that it's not available on as many platforms. At the time of writing, Fortnite is out for basically every current video game system, whereas Apex Legends is only on PC, PS4, and Xbox One. However, there are talks of a mobile port for Apex Legends, so that advantage may soon be gone.

In the meantime, Apex Legends fans can keep themselves busy by refining their strategies and mastering their favorite Legend.

Apex Legends is out now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
