Newcomers to Apex Legends will find the Respawn Entertainment title both familiar and unfamiliar territory. The Titanfall creators may have used the same universe, but Apex Legends is a hero shooter and a battle royale mixed into one. Three-man player squads duke it out in last-team-standing face-offs across huge and wildly-diverse maps.

This battle royale doesn't just rely on quick wits, fast mobility, and appropriately-kitted weapons for squads to outlast foes. Rather, even the Legend of choice can steer a team's path to victory. For beginners, this can seem overwhelming. With that in mind, here are a few great options for newcomers to use and master first.

10 Gibraltar (Defensive)

Gibraltar in Apex Legends

Despite his jolly nature, Gibraltar is darn good at what he does: protecting his squad. As a Defensive Legend, Gibraltar specializes in protecting his team in risky situations. His Gun Shield (Passive) gives him a 50 HP shield during ADS, allowing him to tank hits while allies recover or run.

With Dome of Protection (Tactical), Gibraltar summons a dome that absorbs all incoming and outgoing damage – perfect for emergency healing. This forces enemies to get inside the Dome in order to hit Gibraltar's team, great for close-range combatants. Meanwhile, Defensive Bombardment (Ultimate) summons a rain of explosives to Gibraltar's target, potentially obliterating the area of enemies.

9 Octane (Offensive)

Octane - Apex Legends Best Legends Beginners

Players who want to train their mobility wouldn't get it anywhere else than from Octane. This Offensive Legend's Stim (Tactical) trades a bit of health for a 30% movement and 40% sprint boost. This immediately sets up Octane as a scout, a bait for an ambush, or a flanker against distracted opponents.

Additionally, Octane's other abilities support his high-risk, high-reward playstyle. Swift Mend (Passive) slowly heals Octane while not taking damage, and even heals him when knocked down. Lastly, his Launch Pad (Ultimate) allows him to cover ridiculous vertical distances – perfect for quick escapes or creative traps.

8 Fuse (Offensive)

Fuse - Apex Legends Best Legends Beginners

Grenades can make all the offensive difference in a firefight, and Fuse adds a ton of "fire" to fight. In fact, his Grenadier (Passive) lets him carry an extra grenade per inventory slot. His Knuckle Cluster (Tactical) not only messes around with opponents with small DPS, it can also disable Legend traps and deployables from a distance. Lastly, Fuse's Motherlode (Ultimate) lets him encircle an area in flames, damaging opponents who try to escape while forcing people inside it to fight.

Despite his aggressive toolkit, Fuse works best when paired with a defensive or slow build. His Motherlode can easily ruin an ongoing firefight and steal kills – and Fuse can use it from as far as 200 meters away.

7 Revenant (Offensive)

Revenant - Apex Legends Best Legends Beginners

Opposite Pathfinder's cheerful self is Revenant, an ambush specialist with a love for death and all things related to dying. His Stalker (Passive) equates his crouch-walking to his walking and lets him climb walls twice as high, making him a nimbler and more offensive Recon.

Additionally, Revenant's more active abilities make him stand out as a threat. Silence (Tactical) lets him launch up to two devices that explode and silence Legends in the area. Likewise, his Death Totem lets people who touch it become a shadow to fight in excursions – only to retreat to the Death Totem upon death. This can motivate Revenant users to make a stand in clutch fights, or even get a guaranteed second life in a skirmish.

6 Loba (Support)

Loba - Apex Legends Best Legends Beginners

Loba can get the team equipped within the opening minutes of the match. Her Eye for Quality (Passive) highlights all nearby Legendary and Epic loot, helping the team get the right attachments. Moreover, her Burglar's Best Friend (Tactical) teleports her to where her bracelet lands after throwing it.

However, where she truly shines is her Black Market Boutique (Ultimate). This ability allows Loba's squad to steal up to two items and all ammo they can carry. This lets Loba get items from the ground, nearby pods, vaults, and other compartments. Since Loba starts a match with the fast-charging Boutique at 50%, she can get the team equipped and ready to kill within minutes in high-loot zones.

5 Crypto (Recon)

Crypto - Apex Legends Best Legends Beginners

Preparation is key to victory, and there's no better way to prepare than with excellent surveillance. Crypto specializes in ensuring he and his allies know their immediate environment inside and out. His Surveillance Drone (Tactical) is his biggest asset, as his compact bot can travel as far as 200 meters away. It can ping opponents and items, get banner cards, and even use beacons instantly. Though Crypto becomes stationary when using the Drone, this Tactical can make for perfect setups.

Crypto can also share intel with allies instantaneously, as his Neurolink (Passive) shows allies what the Drone sees within 30 meters of them. He can also crash shields and trap-dependent Legends with his Drone EMP (Ultimate) – perfect for causing panic and disorienting enemy squads.

4 Wraith (Offensive)

Wraith - Apex Legends Best Legends Beginners

Stealth can dictate who lives and who dies in a firefight, and Wraith dominates just that. She's known for Into the Void, her handy tactical that allows her to "vanish" into a blue wisp and reposition quickly – perfect for escapes and flanking attacks. Moreover, Wraith's Dimensional Rift (Ultimate) allows her to setup a long-distance portal for anyone to use. With the right skill level, a Wraith can use her phasing and Rifts to lead enemies straight to an ambush.

Additionally, her Voices from the Void (Passive) acts like a sixth-sense, where a voice will warn the player if there are many nearby enemies, if an enemy is aiming at them, and even if there nearby traps. With her toolkit, Wraith's mobility is easily a lethal asset in both fast-paced firefights and careful approaches.

3 Lifeline (Support)

Lifeline - Apex Legends Best Legends Beginners

Legends with all-around abilities boost a squad's chances of survival, and Lifeline is the very definition of that. As a Support Legend, Lifeline can make the difference in a firefight with her healing. Players know her best for D.O.C. Heal Drone (Tactical), a floating bot she can whip out to heal for as long as 20 seconds.

With Care Package (Ultimate), Lifeline can call a drop pod of her own with three high-quality loot. These can range from gear, consumables, and powerful attachments, resupplying allies between confrontations. However, Lifeline's underrated ability is her Combat Revive (Passive), where D.O.C can heal a downed ally from inside a front-facing shield. Skilled Lifelines can use this Passive to defend the downed ally or even revive another teammate.

2 Bangalore (Offensive)

Bangalore - Apex Legends Best Legends Beginners

Bangalore's straightforward nature makes her one of the deadliest Legends out there. Despite being an Offensive Legend, Bangalore's balanced toolkit can help her become aggressive or defensive as necessary. Her Double Time (Passive) gives her a handy speed boost whenever enemies hit or almost hit her, giving her enough time to run and even alert her to surprise attacks.

However, Bangalore shines most in her practical actives. Her Smoke Launcher (Tactical) gives her two smoke bombs she can use to escape enemies or disorient them during an ambush. Her Rolling Thunder (Ultimate) rains missiles that explode after six seconds – great for skirmishes, ambushes, and even ruining ongoing fights.

1 Bloodhound (Recon)

Bloodhound - Apex Legends Best Legends Beginners

Bloodhound specializes in scouting areas, and his Tracker (Passive) transforms him into the perfect hunter. Newcomers will learn from this Recon Legend's Passive alone, as small icons show up in their view that denote all sorts of movement. These include enemy footprints and almost all environment interactions. With practice, newcomers won't have to be Bloodhound to notice these in higher-level play.

Thanks to Eye of the Allfather (Tactical), Bloodhound becomes more viable for aggression. The Eye scans the immediate area in a 125-degree cone up to 75 meters and highlights hostiles, traps, and even clues. Lastly, Beast of the Hunt (Ultimate) gives Bloodhound a 30-seconds speed boost and threat detection.
