In a manner similar to the surprise reveal of Apex Legends, the announcement of season 1's official release date was almost as swift. Season 1, entitled Wild Frontier, is accompanied by a Battle Pass that rewards players with Apex Coins, skins, and more. In other Battle Royale titles, the final tier of a Battle Pass usually rewards a unique character or skin, but developer Respawn Entertainment has decided that its tier 100 reward should be the game's first ever legendary evolving weapon skin.

This tier 100 skin is for the Havoc energy rifle, but depending on the player's use of the weapon, it will evolve through three stages. The standard form is still impressive enough, but the weapon changes as it gathers more kills (within the match). According to lead product manager Lee Horn, these changes occur midmatch, with the phrasing suggesting that these new forms are only viewable in the Apex Legends match itself.

The base form is seen below and fits in well with other legendary skins found in Apex Legends. The number of kills necessary to unlock the next forms is currently unknown, but its eyes will begin to glow at a certain point (stage 2). After that, the weapon will begin to emit smoke out of its nostrils (stage 3).

While it remains to be seen how this is received as a Tier 100 reward, it is an interesting concept. Presumably, there will be some type of animation to alert players that the weapon has evolved, but since Apex Legends skins are not play-to-win, there's not likely to be any advantage to using this tier 100 weapon skin.

Beyond the addition of the Battle Pass, the official arrival of Octane, Apex Legend's daredevil-like character, is likely to shake the game up as well. It seems like season 1 is already offering enough to get its fanbase's attention, but there are plenty of questions left to be answered such as when new game modes will hit the increasingly popular BR title. As the season moves forward, it seems likely players will receive a few answers.

Apex Legends is out now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
