As anyone who has been watching The Falcon and The Winter Soldier can no doubt explain, one of the show's core struggles is over the mantle of Captain America and who deserves to inherit that legacy from Steve Rogers. While the Captain initially gave his shield over to Anthony Mackie's The Falcon, hoping that he might take up the mantle, the beginning of the show saw him relinquish the shield to the government, hoping to let the name of Captain America die with Steve out of respect for his legacy.

That didn't last for too long, however, as the U.S. government quickly decided that the Captain America brand was too good to let loose and put someone new into the suit. This role was taken up by John Walker, a more pro-government, America-First kind of hero who takes his marching orders directly from Uncle Sam. This doesn't sit right with either The Falcon or The Winter Soldier, and ends up being the main source of tension between the characters in the show, as they wrestle with what the title means and who deserves to carry the shield.

Now come the big spoilers: with The Falcon and the Winter Soldier's finale, Sam Wilson finally makes the decision to take up the Captain America name and everything that carries with it. Besides being an important emotional and thematic climax for the character and series, it also meant that Wilson got an entirely new outfit in accordance with his new position.

News travels fast in the internet age, so at this point, just about everyone who cares has already heard about the Falcon's new job, and as such, Disney has seen fit to release a full poster of Sam Wilson in his new costume. The costume itself is a fairly nice-looking design, incorporating both the traditional Stars and Stripes aesthetic while modernizing the fine details. There's a lot more white on this design as well, which is a nice contrast to the old Cap's outfit, giving Wilson a nice pop that makes him stand out from his predecessor.

The reveal of the new Captain America inevitably came with some other announcements right behind it, as Marvel revealed that it is indeed moving ahead with Captain America 4, which will presumably star Mackie in the title role. The Falcon and The Winter Soldier showrunner Malcolm Spellman is on board to pen the screenplay with series staff writer Dalan Musson.

Anyone trying to fill the shoes of Chris Evans definitely has their work cut out for them, but from what audiences have seen in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, it looks like Mackie has what it takes to make this new Captain America every bit the hero the first one was. Hopefully, the quality of the next film lives up to the ones that helped kickstart the MCU.

The Falcon and The Winter Soldier is available to stream on Disney Plus.
