With only a few weeks left until the launch of Anthem, developer BioWare is hard at work putting the finishing touches on its loot-based shooter. Players, on the other hand, are enjoying their first tastes of the game via the VIP demo last week and the open demo that is taking place this weekend. But while some may be sold on picking up the game, they may be curious which version to pick up.

Of course, the PC version is going to offer the most options in terms of visual customization and graphical fidelity but on the console front, the decision might not be so clear-cut. According to a video test from the folks at Digital Foundry, Anthem runs best on the PS4 Pro not the Xbox One X.

DF’s video shows that the PS4 Pro version runs best because it offers the most options. In “performance mode,” the game can hit frame rates close to 40 or 50 frames per second, whereas the Xbox One X version doesn't offer any "modes" and tops out at 30 frames per second while occasionally dropping below that.

It has everything to do with the options and where the Xbox One X is concerned there aren’t any. PS4 Pro, on the other hand, has the typical options that can favor resolution or frame rate/performance. But when it comes to raw visuals, Digital Foundry found that the 4K output was practically the same.

The biggest element of Digital Foundry’s video is that the game BioWare and Electronic Arts showed off at E3 2017 has had some downgrades in the run-up to its 2019 release. The hub area of Fort Tarsis still looks impressive but what was shown in 2017 had a ton more detail and moving parts. On top of that, BioWare’s demo suggested that transitioning between the various parts of Anthem’s world would be seamless, but the demo features a lot of loading.

Ultimately, though, the final judgments will have to be left for the full release of Anthem later this month. It’s possible that some graphics options are not yet available for the Xbox One X and that optimization work is not present in this 4-month-old build. So, while Xbox One X owners may be concerned that their console – touted as the best of this generation – is outperformed by the PS4 Pro, that may not be true come February 22nd.

Anthem releases February 22, 2019 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One. Early Access for the game begins on February 15th.
