During PAX West, BioWare released a new trailer focused on the different story elements that will be available in its new game Anthem. The developer had promised to talk more about narrative in Anthem, and this trailer gives a good overview of both the player’s individual journey and how the larger world will evolve.

The mantra of the new Anthem trailer is, “Our World, My Story,” which refers to the fact that players will interact with a shared world that belongs to everyone. Presumably, this refers to the missions of Anthem, which appear to be scripted in nature. Everyone experiences these missions in a similar fashion, either solo or with co-op partners.

The “My Story” part comes in when players return to Fort Tarsis. In this bustling merchant town, players will be able to make choices that influence the behaviors of characters and alter the way they are perceived in Fort Tarsis. This will be players’ chance to impact on the narrative in Anthem, and everyone’s experience will be different.

In addition to explaining how missions will impact the world of Anthem and player choice will impact Fort Tarsis, the trailer also shows off plenty of new enemies, encounters, and environments. Thus far, a lot of what BioWare and Electronic Arts have shown has been lush, overgrown locales, but this trailer shows some more ancient environments, almost temple-like in their design.

Anthem’s new trailer also gives us a closer look at some of the other enemies that will be in the Freelancers’ way. Players are going to be doing a lot of shooting in Anthem, so one would expect a variety of bad guys to blow up.

Speaking of blowing up, it’s worth pointing out that this trailer does not feature the damage numbers seen in prior Anthem footage. Players were mixed on the idea of numbers flying all over the screen during EA Play and soon after BioWare confirmed that the damage numbers can be turned off. Now it might be interesting to see if that is turned off by default.

The trailer features a lot to digest, but hopefully BioWare will explain more about the story in the future. As of right now, the studio is trying to explain things generally without giving too many specific examples. But with a February launch looming, there isn’t a lot of time left for mystery.

Anthem releases February 22, 2018 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
