Anthem is a game that just can't seem to catch a break. After a rocky launch, it was largely panned by critics, and stands as the worst-reviewed console game in BioWare history. It then got flak for its endgame content and the loot drop controversy, problems that were quickly overshadowed by reports that Anthem was causing PS4 consoles to experience a full system crash. For those holding out for a fix, BioWare claims to have identified "several causes" for the crashing issue, and will be deploying a fix in a patch next week.

This is according to Head of Live Service at BioWare, Chad Robertson. Robertson took to Twitter to state that there hasn't been a single instance in BioWare's own review of the problem where Anthem has bricked a PS4 console. However, he acknowledged that there was a crashing issue with "no risk of damage," which is what will be fixed in next week's patch.

While BioWare is likely working as fast as it can to deploy a fix for this issue, some may be disappointed that the patch isn't coming sooner. It seems that the risk of Anthem actually bricking one's console is very low, but even so, some gamers may not be willing to take any chances by playing the game before the new patch is live.

Anthem's ongoing technical issues could prevent lapsed players from returning to the game once it's fixed, especially with a number of major releases coming over the next few weeks. Next week comes a similar online co-op shooter in The Division 2 that will be directly competing for Anthem's audience, and this Friday will see the release of Devil May Cry 5, which has earned near-universal acclaim from critics.

However, if BioWare is able to avoid any other major technical issues with Anthem in the future and can provide the game with quality new content, it could still change the narrative. But for now, Anthem seems like it has a long way to go if it hopes to be the big success BioWare and EA were hoping for it to be.

Anthem is out now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
