Throughout the annals of video game history, the medium has been populated with myriad products that have titles which can provoke interest and resonate with players–Shadow of the Colossus is a solid contender here–or have names with the potential to elicit confusion and make no sense whatsoever (Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together). So, it stands to reason that the name of a video game is an important factor that developers have to consider when creating any given release.

Contemporary games and new IPs such as the upcoming action-RPG, Anthem, are not exempt from this, and it's safe to presume that it becomes more difficult by the day for companies like BioWare to come up with titles that will not only capture the attention of players, but also distill a sense of what the game is actually about. Regarding this matter, we recently had the chance to ask Anthem Executive Producer Mark Darrah why the studio chose the name as the game's final title.

"Naming things is incredibly difficult. We’ve had other names that we considered for this game. What you want for a game like this is, you want something that feels big, that sort of hints at the nature of the game. So, something Anthem does, is it hints at cooperativeness, it hints at togetherness, it hints at some of the other themes, whereas some of the other names that we talked about . . . felt a little too small."

When it comes to Anthem's cooperative nature, BioWare is definitely doubling down on putting the emphasis on players working together toward a common goal, with the studio having declared that single-player won't be as rewarding as squad-play. The developer has also previously implied that "togetherness" is a huge factor of the game, as Anthem lead producer Mike Gamble confirmed that the game's missions will keep multiplayer groups tethered.

It won't be too much longer before players looking forward to Anthem will be able to give the action-RPG a go and see how the title exudes these qualities, as the game's VIP Demo is slated for this weekend. While this trial run is likely an exciting prospect for many BioWare fans eager to see what the company has in store for them, only time will tell if Anthem's name itself will be remembered as one of the great video game titles.

Anthem is scheduled to release on February 22, 2019 for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
