BioWare's ambitious next title Anthem is still a long way off, but we're starting to get a more detailed picture of what the game will be like thanks to frequent details from developers. Information about the gear mechanics in the game is something fans are very curious about; it has been confirmed that weapons will feature random stat rolls, and now it has also been revealed that certain combinations of gear will offer set bonuses.
Online RPG's like Anthem usually live or die by the strength of their loot and progression systems, which makes this latest, seemingly minor detail about set bonuses quite important for fans of the genre. Set bonuses, as the name suggests, offer some kind of boost to a player who manages to acquire and equip every piece of gear from a single set, creating an incentive for players to grind for specific loot.
The information, much like most of what we know about the game, comes from the twitter feed of the game's Executive Producer Mark Darrah. Darrah is known for using his social media account most days to answer fan questions about anything from weather effects to dialogue choices.
As can be seen in the above tweet, Darrah didn't exactly shower us with details about these set bonuses, but some interesting information can still be extracted. With set bonuses confirmed, it seems clear that Anthem will boast a considerable loot pool, with each set consisting of a number of different pieces for players to collect.
One may also assume that hunting for rare sets of gear will be one of the tasks that face high level players. There could be all kinds of interesting set bonuses on offer, and so acquiring these individual pieces could be a part of the endgame content that BioWare has described as being "really important" to them.
The more Mark Darrah tweets, the more promising Anthem sounds. However, arguably even more promising is the precedent this sets for BioWare's community engagement following the game's release. A developer talking directly to fans and even correcting their publisher's inaccurate information can only be a good thing for the players, and bodes very well for the future of Anthem post-release.
Anthem is currently scheduled to release on February 22, 2019 for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
