In the forthcoming 1.0.4 update, BioWare is introducing Elysian Chests to its latest looter shooter, Anthem. These chests should go a long way in vamping the endgame Stronghold content, because these Elysian Chests will appear at the end of the three major Strongholds. When opened with a key, these chests will offer rewards of a single vanity item or Masterwork crafting materials for every player taking on the Stronghold.

Moreover, players will not get any duplicates from these Elysian Chests and every item is exclusive, meaning players won't ever see them on sale in Anthem's in-game store. That's not to say these chests are the end-all of cosmetic complaints, however, as players will not be able to find armor packs inside of them.

This was recently clarified by BioWare lead producer Ben Irving. Many had high hopes after Irving misspoke and told a fan that armor packs would be found in Elysian Chests. He admits to having misread the question and clarified that these Elysian Chests in Anthem will contain Vinyls, Arrival Animations, Victory Poses, and Emotes, but no armor packs. He also said that there will be more details coming.

In light of the loot controversy, this really begs the question as to why armor pieces, if not full armor sets, cannot be rewards from these chests. This is a new grind element in which players will need to gather Cache Keys, save them up for the most reward, and then complete a Stronghold to earn. Perhaps there is some unnamed reward that BioWare is hiding up its sleeve, but many may not see the limited reward as worth it.

For now, the only way to acquire armor sets in Anthem is through the in-game store. Whether that changes as the developer moves forward with Anthem's 90-day roadmap remains to be seen, but as we inch closer to April, players can expect a new Mastery progression system, a new Stronghold, and guilds. In May, there will also be a new Cataclysm event, but for now, all eyes are on the 1.0.4 update.

Anthem is out now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
