Anthem developer BioWare has pushed an update live that decreases the rarity of drops from chests. The team did so after a farming method was discovered that let players load up a high difficulty mission and farm high rarity loot.

Essentially, what Anthem players discovered was that they could launch Freeplay on Grandmaster 3 difficulty, head right towards a chest, open it, and have a chance at high rarity loot. This became a quick and easy farming method for high tier loot in Anthem, but as with any farm, it undermined the experience.

What was surprising, though, was how quickly Anthem developer BioWare was able to respond to the chest farm and remove it. Now, chests have a reduced chance of rewarding high rarity loot, thereby killing the need to farm them.

The good news is that the Anthem infrastructure is nimble enough that BioWare can make these types of changes quickly and without requiring an update. According to producer Mike Gamble, these types of changes are server side and the game was built with this type of scalability in mind. As opposed to a game like Destiny, which requires a long wait for updates, or Division, which waits until weekly maintenance to make changes, it seems as though Anthem can go live with a change much quicker.

On the flip side, there is concern over the fact that BioWare would remove this farming method so quickly and not address the dozen or more issues that are hindering players’ progress or affecting their experience. There is a day one patch coming on February 22nd, but for players in Early Access there is a lot of frustration. And to have BioWare focus on exploits instead of fixes is frustrating.

Ultimately, the benefits of this ability to quickly fix will be better seen once Anthem officially releases on February 22nd. After that, BioWare will be able to focus on player feedback from the entire community and make changes based on that feedback. However, there are some important fixes already on the way, including an update that makes the Tomb of Legionnaires challenge much easier to complete.

Anthem releases February 22, 2019 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
