The publicist of actress Anne Heche has told reporters that Heche is in stable condition as of Sunday, following a crash in which her car slammed into a stranger’s home.

The crash occurred at 10:55 am last Friday. According to LAPD, Heche was driving in the Mar Vista neighborhood of Los Angeles “at a high rate of speed" when she “ran off the road and collided” with a home in the neighborhood. Heche's blue Mini Cooper went fully into the house and may have even hit the opposite wall, then burst into flames. The house also caught fire and according to the LA Fire Department, it took 65 minutes for the 59 firefighters on the scene to extinguish it.

A tow truck eventually arrived and had to drag the car out of the wreckage of the home, and Heche was carried by stretcher to an ambulance. Police said to the LA Times that Heche was “deemed to be under the influence and acting erratically” at the time of the crash. A story from TMZ also alleges that Heche got into another accident earlier in the morning, supposedly crashing her car into a wall in the parking lot of a nearby apartment complex and driving away. Videos online appear to show the incident, as well as Heche speeding in the residential neighborhood.

As of Sunday Anne Heche is hospitalized with severe burns and intubated, but is in stable condition. There have been no other reports of injuries, as the owner of the home is believed to have been in the backyard at the time. The actress is best known for her breakthrough role in the television soap opera Another World (1987-1991) as well as several major films in the 1990s, including Donnie Brasco (1997), I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997), and Gus Van Sant's remake of Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho (1998). More recently, she portrayed the mother of Jeffrey Dahmer in 2017’s My Friend Dahmer.

Heche has struggled with mental illness in the past, stemming from childhood sexual abuse at the hands of her father. She has also had previous incidents involving drugs, although the cause of this weekend’s incident is still unknown. In 2000 she drove into a rural area of California under the influence of ecstasy wearing only a bra and shorts and walked into the home of a stranger who recognized her from her films. There she showered, asked for a pair of slippers, and requested they watch a movie together. After more than half an hour passed with no indication that she intended to leave, the man called the police.
