To Your Eternity is not afraid to pull at the audience's heartstrings, and that is putting things mildly. The same can be said for Made in Abyss, another dark fantasy anime that follows children on a grand and dangerous adventure. Both shows deliver complex narratives set in worlds that emphasize the best and worst of humanity; that said, Made in Abyss tends to focus a touch more on the latter than the former. Still, the series has its hopeful and uplifting moments.
Looking to follow in her mother's footsteps, Riko decides to head into the Abyss, a multi-layered dungeon filled with all sorts of wonders and nightmares. Along this journey, she is accompanied by an android named Reg who is suffering from amnesia.
10 Kino's Journey

To Your Eternity chronicles Fushi's growth through his life experiences and relationships. Most arcs introduce new characters, settings, and ideologies. Kino's Journey follows a similar formula as the titular character travels across a fantasy world, experiencing different cultures along the way.
Unlike To Your Eternity's Fushi, Kino serves as an impartial outsider who seeks to soak in the climate without directly influencing it. That's not to say the protagonist is completely passive, but their characterization does not change much throughout the series. The anime's focus is squarely on the sites.
9 Wandering Witch: The Journey Of Elaina
Japanese Title |
Majo no Tabitabi |

Studio |
C2C |
Where to Stream |
After becoming a fully-fledged witch, Elaina sets out to travel the world and visit as many societies as possible. The Journey of Elaina is reminiscent of Kino's Journey, including a protagonist who mostly tries to avoid getting involved in the locals' lives. That said, Elaina is a considerably louder figure than Kino or Fushi; consequently, she can be a polarizing character.
Wandering Witch: The Journey of Elaina does a good job of introducing the various towns and cities showcased throughout its run. They are diverse and fascinating, allowing for the anime to embrace wildly different tones from episode to episode.
