Working as a host or hostess at a club might have a little bit of a negative reputation to it, but there’s more to it that meets the eye. A host or hostess’ job is catering to the needs of their clients by mostly pouring their drinks, eating food with them, and just having conversation with them. Sometimes the host or hostess will flirt with their clients to make them feel better and hoping to get better tips.

These anime characters show that there’s a lot more to them than this. Some work as hosts because they enjoy the work and company they have. Others work as hosts as a nighttime job to bring in extra for themselves and their families. But seeing them outside of work provides for some heartwarming or hilarious moments that just make them the best.

10 Masamune Matsuoka (Aoharu X Machinegun)

Confident and charming, Masamune seems to be the perfect host working at a popular host club. However, just because he’s charming doesn’t mean he won’t con someone if he can. This is how he met Hotaru Tachibana. He’d conned her friend and she wanted revenge, but Masamune challenged her to a survival game and she lost. But even though Masamune is good at observing things, he could be considered dense since he doesn't know Hotaru is a girl.

Though confident most of the time, there are times where Masamune gets very anxious. When he’s like this, his fears take over and influence him. He does his best to keep himself calm, but there are times where it becomes too much to the point that he almost has breakdowns.

9 Yasuko Takasu (Toradora!)

Ryuuji’s clumsy yet well-meaning mother who raises him all by herself. When Yasuko revealed to Ryuuji’s father that she was pregnant, he ran away and her parents were unsupportive of her decision to go through with the pregnancy. She ran away from home because of the rising tensions, taking whatever she could from them that she could sell. Despite all this, Yasuko managed to support herself and Ryuuji by working as a hostess and at a bakery.

She does tend to overwork herself, but Yasuko is determined to make sure Ryuuji doesn’t have to work until after he graduates. Though a bit airheaded and having to rely on her son to take care of the house chores, Yasuki truly wants what’s best for Ryuuji and wants him to have a good life.

8 Shiro Takaoji (Ouran High School Host Club)

Shiro is an honorary member of Ouran Host Club after he wanted to learn how to impress a girl that he likes. When observing Tamaki, Shiro is incredibly blunt and insults the girl that Tamaki was spending time with. He also insults the rest of the hosts, even almost giving away Haruhi’s secret. But the club does agree to help with Renge’s help and she coaches him on becoming his character, “The Naughty Boy” host type.

He does succeed in impressing the girl he likes and they stay in touch after she moves away to Germany. Sadly for Tamaki, Shiro does temporarily take away all his clients at the end of the episode, showing that he could potentially be more popular.

7 Hifumi Izanami (Hypnosis Mic: Division Rap Battle: Rhyme Anima)

A host that seems to radiate confidence and is very charismatic that works at the host club “Fragrance”. Hifumi seems carefree and is able to talk to his female clients easily, but it’s all an act to hide the truth. He’s actually quite terrified of women and became a host to conquer this fear, becoming successful in doing so.

When he puts his suit on, Hifumi feels like a different person and is very confident. However, he only gets this confidence when he’s wearing it, but it has helped become the number one host in Shinjuku.

6 Tae Shimura (Gintama)

The older sister of Shinpachi and the de facto lady boss of Shinsengumi, Tae is a cabaret hostess at Snack Smile. Though she’s more of a bouncer and is very quick to anger and can be pretty violent. But this violent streak is mostly towards Kondou Isao, who does have a slight tendency to stalk her. Even though she’s a hostess, Tae’s vocabulary is quite vulgar and Shinpachi will often scold her for it.

The Shinsengumi have accepted her since Kondou spends a lot of time with her even though she’s not an official member. Plus, she’s known for having insane strength and has been shown to punch through solid steel with her bare fists.

5 Haru Kaido (Super Lovers)

After an accident left him with memory loss and his parents dead, Haru started working as a host at a club to provide for his younger brothers. He uses most of the money he makes to pay for their school fees. Because he goes by the name “Natsu” at his job, he and his coworker Natsuo often get mixed up with each other because of their similar-sounding names.

Even while working as a host, he often talks about his younger brothers. He does eventually leave the club to work at the cafe he and his brothers open and works full-time there.

4 Mizuki Akitomo (Kotaro Lives Alone)

Probably the closest person that Kotaro has to having a mother. Mizuki is one of his neighbors that looks after him when she can. She eats dinner with him from time to time along with Shin Karino and Isamu Tamaru. When she saw that Kotaro wasn’t getting much sleep, she invited him to stay with her overnight in hopes that would help him.

Kotaro even purchased time with her at the host club she worked at because he was afraid of her leaving since she wasn’t making enough money. A few of the parents from Kotaro’s school did judge her because of her job, but Mizuki is truly a kind-hearted woman who cares for Kotaro. Because of him, Mizuki gathered the strength to leave and report her abusive boyfriend.

3 Madame Christmas, AKA Chris Mustang (Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood)

Madame Christmas is the owner of a hostess bar in Central City. She’s also the aunt and adopted mother of Roy Mustang, having adopted him after his parents died. Though it seems like she runs a typical hostess bar, Madame Christmas and the women that work for her are actually quite the sleuths for Mustang and his group. Using his womanizing reputation as an advantage, Mustang will go to Madame Christmas’ establishment under the guise that he’s there for the services.

The information she provides is invaluable to him and she helped him find out the truth about Selim Bradley/Pride. Though a bit gruff, Madame Christmas deeply cares for her nephew and told him that she has high expectations of him. She even sent the girls who worked for her to Xing to prevent them from being victims of Promised Day.

2 Akari Kawamoto (March Comes In Like A Lion)

The oldest Kawamoto sister and a hard worker that stepped up to take care of her younger sisters. During the day, Akari helps their grandfather by working at his confectionery store then at night, she works at their aunt’s bar as a hostess. It’s a little surprising to see the transformation between her day job and what she wears at home versus her hostess outfits.

Rei sometimes visits her with his shogi friends and remarks that she’s a little different there than at home. When she saw that his friends were going to force him to pay for their drinks, Akari tricked his friend Issa into paying. Even when working, she looks after Rei and his well-being, showing that she’s still her caring self no matter what.

1 The Ouran Host Club (Ouran High School Host Club)

The Ouran Host Club is one big hilarious family. They offer different types of hosts to suit the needs of their clients. If ladies are looking for the handsome, charismatic type, Tamaki Suoh is the guy they spend time with. If they’re looking for someone mischievous, the Hitachiin twins are the ones to pay for and usually are together as the “forbidden brotherly love” package. Honey-senpai and Mori-senpai are also usually together as the cute loli-boy and silent strong type.

Meanwhile, Haruhi is just her authentic self since she’s only working for the club because she broke something. Kyoya doesn’t work as a host, but he keeps it afloat by working behind-the-scenes taking care of financial needs and creating merchandise for their clients.
