Monster House is a computer-animated, 2006, horror/fantasy movie. It gets lost in the endless sea of animated and stop-motion entertainment. But it's definitely worth rewatching and remembering. The story is really compelling, the animation is stylistically spooky, and there's even a twist at the end that will pull on some heartstrings.

Monster House is the story about a boy and his two friends who discover their next-door neighbor's house is an actual monster. The boy, DJ, is home alone for Halloween when his parents go out of town. In this comedic holiday family movie, no one believes DJ and his friends when they try to warn the adults. Instead, they have to find a way to stop the monster house before Halloween. If they don't, then there will be a ton of trouble for trick-or-treaters.

The house is owned by an old man named Nebbercracker. Throughout the duration of this film, he is seen as a villain or the ghost who still haunts the house when he presumably dies. But by the end of the movie, there will be a twist that both surprises and causes some emotional feelings. Halloween is one of everyone's favorite holidays because of how fun and exciting it can be. This movie is great for many reasons, but one of the best reasons is because of its unique story. The characters are fun and the dialogue is comedic. Audiences of all ages will find themselves laughing at the jokes in this film.

The animation in this film is stylish in a spooky and fun way. It is computer-animated, but definitely has its own vibe that separates it from other movies. Animated Halloween movies are not as abundant as some other animated stories and themes. Halloween being only once a year makes it special, and that's why Halloween movies are so enjoyable. The themes in this movie are dark, and it has an aesthetic to match. The artwork feels gritty and unpolished which further sets it apart from other animated films like Frozen or Onward.

Anybody who enjoys a good mystery set in a Halloween world would like this movie. It's just as much for adults as it is for children. This movie is entertaining from start to finish. Some of the more memorable scenes within the actual house are great animated cinematic achievements. Some good movies to watch that will give viewers a similar feeling to watching Monster House are The Halloween Tree, Halloween Town, or perhaps The Polar Express for a similar stylistic narrative themed around a holiday.

At the beginning of the movie, the old man who owned the house has some sort of heart attack and is taken away in an ambulance. The audience can see a blade of grass holding onto the wheels of his stretcher. And when the film is finished, this scene becomes much sadder. It's the little details like the 'camera' looking through the windows of the monster house, symbolically representing the "window are the eyes to the soul" saying, that make Monster House something worth remembering.

This movie has some pretty adult themes, and some of the characters might actually be a little too edgy for some children, if they can even pick up on the subtle meanings of things within the movie. The characters Zee and her drunk boyfriend Bones are wild and it is so entertaining to see DJ interact with them. There is a scene where DJ calls his friend, Chowder, after having what he thinks is just a nightmare about the house. When he asks Chowder where his parents are, he responds with "my dad's at the pharmacy and my mom's at the movies with her personal trainer." The subtlety of some of the jokes makes this film so quotable.

Some of the best quotes are from Chowder. Like when he and DJ are trying to impress their cute girl friend. Chowder pretends to be on the phone with his dad, tells him to kiss his hairy butt, and turns around to ask, "hey DJ, you got any beer?" As if he doesn't know the girl would be right there. Some other memorable characters with hilarious dialogue are the two cops voiced by Nick Cannon and Kevin James. Of course, they don't believe DJ and his friends, so they make fun of them and offer up some pretty funny jokes.

There's even a scene where the kids have to enlist the help of a pro-arcade gamer named Skull. Monster House is definitely worth a watch or rewatch, especially for people who haven't seen it for several years. It is not just another animated movie. The story is unique and complex. The characters have diverse personalities. And the brilliance lies in the ability to make scenarios that kids will find funny while simultaneously making jokes that adults can appreciate.
