It has been nearly two decades ever since Nintendo released the first Animal Crossing game worldwide, which immediately captivated the imagination of gamers from all walks of life. From the first Animal Crossing game up until Animal Crossing: New Horizons, the franchise has since produced over 400 adorable characters that added to the charm and appeal of the social simulation series.

Of course, it is no secret to veteran Animal Crossing players that not all villagers are bright and bubbly, especially in early Animal Crossing games. However, although villagers are much nicer in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, there are still a few that aren't afraid to be sarcastic and sometimes downright mean to the player and other villagers. Now, here are some of the meanest things that have been said by a villager in New Horizons and other Animal Crossing games.

"What Do You and a Used Pencil Have in Common?"

During a conversation between the player, Zucker, and Miranda in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Zucker, who is a lazy octopus villager attempted to make a joke about how Miranda and a centipede both own a lot of shoes. Of course, given that Miranda has a snooty personality, she wasn't impressed by the joke and immediately fired back at Zucker by asking him what he and a used pencil have in common, which of course implies that Zucker is useless.

"Anything Could Come in Handy on an Island Like This!"

Ever since his introduction in Animal Crossing: New Leaf, Marshal has been a favorite among Animal Crossing fans, making him one of the most sought after villagers in New Horizons. However, given Marshal's smug personality, he is extremely difficult to impress, making him appear unfriendly towards the player and other villagers. In the tweet above, it was shown that the player attempted to give Marshal a gift. However, upon receiving the present, it is obvious that Marshal doesn't care for it, and even hurled out an insult to the player saying, "I guess anything could come in handy at some point on an island like this."

100% Pure, Fresh-Squeezed, Organic STUPIDITY!"

Although villagers in Animal Crossing: New Horizons can still be mean sometimes, their insults and mean-spirited attitude are no match for their versions in previous Animal Crossing games. Prior to the release of Animal Crossing: New Horizons, one player posted on Twitter about his several encounters with the cranky squirrel villager Static. In this example, it appears that the player somehow got into the bad side of Static, leading him to make the remark, "That is 100% pure, fresh-squeezed, organic STUPIDITY." Unfortunately, the player who posted the photo did not provide context as to why Static got angry with them, but it is interesting to see what he is referring to as stupid.

"You Filthy Ogre!"

Ursala is a sisterly villager who made her debut in the first Animal Crossing game for the GameCube. Of course, veteran players of the franchise would know that this specific Animal Crossing game has some of the meanest villagers in the entire franchise and this photo posted by a player on Twitter is a prime example. It is unclear what transpired between the player and Ursala in this scenario, but it led to Ursala calling the player a "filthy ogre", and wishing them to be "stung by a thousand bees!" And they say Animal Crossing is a kids game.

"You Fat, Bloated Idiot!"

The cranky dog villager named Butch is also a good example of just how vicious early versions of villagers in Animal Crossing can be. In this situation, it appears that the player somehow made Butch angry, which is probably easy to accomplish given that cranky villagers are known to get easily offended whenever the player disagrees with whatever they have to say or refuses to do a favor for them. Nonetheless, this specific encounter made Butch so mad that he started calling the player names such as "wretch", "utter waste", and "fat, bloated idiot."

In the end, although villagers in Animal Crossing: New Horizons are definitely nicer than their previous counterparts, there are still those that can be mean when provoked. Of course, the insults hurled by villagers in New Horizons are nothing compared to those by villagers from the GameCube version of Animal Crossing. Nonetheless, this just goes to show that no matter how wholesome and vanilla Animal Crossing may appear on the surface, there are still aspects of the game that definitely provide some color and drama, which for better or worse, adds to the charm of Animal Crossing as a whole.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons is out now exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.
