Just last year, Nintendo introduced its massive Switch install base to the world of Animal Crossing with Animal Crossing: New Horizons. The series has grown quite a lot in recent years, fairing very well with New Leaf on the Nintendo 3DS in 2012, but with millions of Switch owners stuck indoors last year due to quarantine and lockdown orders as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, New Horizons' therapeutic island getaway was just what many needed during a time of uncertainty.
Although the game was initially rather bare-bones by the standard of previous Animal Crossing games, Nintendo has been regularly updating the soothing life-sim to include new items, new characters, and new events for players to look forward to. Now, to celebrate the 35th anniversary of Super Mario Bros., Animal Crossing: New Horizons is receiving a Super Mario-themed update, and while it includes a lot of neat goodies, the new Warp Pipe item is what's grabbing everyone's attention.
During last week's Nintendo Direct, fans were treated to a sneak peek at the new Super Mario items coming to New Horizons, including Mario and Peach outfits, furniture based on power-ups, and Warp Pipes allowing players to travel between different points on their island. Now, the official Nintendo of America Twitter account has revealed more details on how the nifty Warp Pipe items will work in the game.
While many of the items coming in this new update are from past Animal Crossing games, the Warp Pipe item is brand new. Previously, it was revealed that players will be able to place 2 Pipes on their island to quickly travel between each location. However, Nintendo has now also revealed that placing more than 2 Warp Pipes will allow players to warp to a random location. On their official website, Nintendo also revealed that players can even travel to Warp Pipes placed inside of their home. Additionally, it is noted that players must clear enough "landing space" around the new items for them to work properly.
Reportedly, the new Mario-themed outfits contain special properties that allow players to interact with some of the new items, so it is unclear if players will need to be wearing one of these costumes to utilize Mario's iconic Warp Pipes. Regardless, the items will make traveling around players' islands much easier than before. While Nintendo didn't reveal any more information, it will be interesting to see if any additional surprises await players upon the game's newest update.
At Animal Crossing: New Horizons' initial release, fans were disappointed to see that Mario-themed items were missing from the game, as they had become mainstays in previous entries. But now, fans are excited as ever to celebrate the 35th anniversary of Super Mario Bros. in New Horizons next month.
