Animal Crossing: New Horizons, despite its extremely deep options for customization, does not feature many crossover items. If a New Horizons item pays homage to another Nintendo property, it is usually in a minor way like Princess Peach-themed surprise box. In 2021, however, that is going to change.

While IKEA focuses on making real Animal Crossing furniture, Nintendo is planning to add some Mario designs into the beloved game soon. Announced in a Mario Anniversary Nintendo Direct and planned for March 2021, furniture based on the Super Mario games and worlds was confirmed. What exactly the themed furniture will look like was not shared, however, but fans of the series should have a general idea as to what the content could end up looking like.

Given all the fancy and unique pieces of furniture present within Animal Crossing, Nintendo has the freedom to do whatever it wants with the crossover. Everything from green pipe chairs to stuffed Yoshi dolls could be present within the update, and it will certainly be fun for Mario fans to see some of their favorite designs scattered around their islands. Perhaps even statues of Bowser, Mario, and others could come to the game.

Whether the update adds anything other than furniture was not shared, though with Animal Crossing players creating amazing mini-games all the time, some official Mario events from the New Horizons team could prove to be exciting. Super Mario content will fit well within the world of Animal Crossing, though it would be surprising and a bit disappointing if the furniture announced today was all that showed up within New Horizons. After all, the potential for costumes seems too good to pass up.

Hopefully, this Super Mario crossover is the first of many for New Horizons. Items from Metroid, Zelda, and other iconic Nintendo franchises could really spice up the variety in island designs if they were to come to the game. If they do not ever happen, at least clever players will make great designs of their own to mimic what official crossovers would look like. Still, it would be great to see more themed furniture and items offered in the game, with a Pokemon event full of crossover villagers seeming too perfect of an opportunity for the New Horizons team to create one day.

The Mario furniture crossover was an extremely brief bit of news within the surprise Nintendo Direct, which also showcased the Super Mario 3D All-Stars Collection. Nonetheless, the small bit of news is still exciting for fans of both franchises, and if it does well, perhaps more Nintendo crossovers will come. At the very least, though, New Horizons players can expect a bit of Mario on their islands in March of next year.
