Animal Crossing: New Horizons released earlier this year and quickly became a massive hit, not only with long-time fans of the franchise but also bringing in a whole new audience who found themselves drawn to the idyllic game in these trying times. This latest installment is undoubtedly the best game in the series so far, offering players new types of gameplay and a plethora of new customization options.

One of the fan-favorite features of the games is that different villagers move into your town, with players falling in love with some of the characters while wishing that certain others would move out. One of the new characters to be added to New Horizons has taken the fandom by storm and quickly solidified himself as the top cat, quite literally. Raymond the cat villager appears to be the most popular villager out there, but is he getting a little overrated? Read on to see why that may be the case.

10 Everyone Has Him

Because of Raymond's popularity, it seems as though nearly everyone has him on their island, but this can cause a bit of a dampener for players. It breaks the immersion in the game for many. If they have Raymond on their island and then they visit him on another player's island, he doesn't know them at all.

It's not something that can easily be fixed, as logically he can't really live in two places at once, but Nintendo could implement something so that he at least acknowledges who you are if he also lives with you.

9 He's Monopolizing the Merchandise

Unsurprisingly, the massive success of Animal Crossing: New Horizons has prompted a whole new range of merchandise to be created for adoring fans to buy up, both official and non-official. As one of the most popular characters, Raymond has been getting his fair share of merchandise made in his image, as it's a no brainer that companies will make a quick buck by selling his stuff.

The downside is this means manufacturers are opting to overlook many other villagers that fans would love to own some merchandise of. Raymond is essentially monopolizing the market.

8 He Was Manufactured To Sell Well

Raymond was manufactured to be a fan-favorite and he didn't fail in this mission. Nintendo knew what it was doing when it created the hipster-style, pretty-boy Raymond, with his unique complete heterochromia, stylish hairdo, and his quirky penchant for dressing in maid outfits.

Even his name seems to allude to the idea that he was made to be loved, with it being reminiscent of the TV show Everybody Loves Raymond. They really aren't kidding– everybody does love Raymond when it comes to the Animal Crossing community.

7 He Stymies Players Personalization

It's strange to think that in a game where players are encouraged to personalize their islands in layout and design, most opt to use the same villagers as everyone else, specifically Raymond. Players strive to create their own individual island paradises to showcase to others, complete with custom designs to ensure no one else has the same look, yet then most islands feature the same "popular" villagers.

Not only does this stymie the idea of having a personalized island, but it leaves so many animal villagers out, who if given the chance could actually be a new favorite of the player. It's time to take a chance on one of the lesser-known animal villagers.

6 He's Smug

Raymond is a smug personality type villager, which means he can be very self-centered and dismissive of others, including the player. This isn't exactly a desirable trait to have, yet players are willing to overlook his less than perfect personality just because he looks cute.

As well as talking about himself at length, Raymond can also be fairly condescending towards others if their ideals don't align with his own, as he believes he is right when it comes to anything and everything.

5 He Clashes With the Cranky Villager Type

As a smug type villager, this means that Raymond is prone to clashing with villagers with the cranky personality type. Don't be fooled by their distinction though, cranky villagers are actually pretty cute with their deep voices and lack of understanding when it comes to modern social trends.

There are many popular cranky villagers that players love to have in their town, so the last thing you want is a smug personality type rubbing them the wrong way. If a smug and cranky villager speak to one another, it often leads to one of the animals walking away upset.

4 Most Common Animal

Raymond is one of the most coveted villagers and is also believed to be one of the rarest characters; however, cat villagers are actually the most common animal type. There are 23 cat villagers in the game at present, with the next highest amount being the rabbit villagers, of which there are 20.

Out of all the cat villagers, there are also nicer characters that can join you on your island, but they're often overlooked as players are too obsessed with getting Raymond.

3 He's Actually Kind of a Jerk

It's not hard to see why some players are beginning to call Raymond overrated as his personality isn't as nice as some of the other villagers; in fact, he can often be a bit of a jerk to both the player and other villagers.

Considering that players only have a certain amount of spaces on their island for their animal neighbors, why are people wasting one of these sought-after spots on a cat that isn't always nice to them? There are far nicer animals out there to invite.

2 His House is Pretty Boring

One of the highlights in having so many different characters on your island is getting to see their houses, with most of them reflecting the personality of the villager it belongs to. Raymond's house is all business, much like himself, and resembles an office space, which is actually pretty boring, to be honest.

Of course, as the player, you can gift him new furnishings that he might actually place in his home, giving the interior some much-needed color and design.

1 He Might Get You In Trouble

Fans have become so obsessed over Ramond and a few other popular villagers that they're willing to shell out some hard-earned cash to get their hands on him. Players are buying and selling villagers online via "The Black Market", with the currency being either in-game Nook Miles Tickets or bells, but sometimes even actual real-world money.

Nintendo is well aware of this and has stated that it will begin to crack down on the buying and selling of villagers as it goes against its terms and conditions. So if you're buying or selling Raymond, be prepared for little cat landing you in a whole world of trouble.
