In Animal Crossing: New Horizons, everyone starts out with one native fruit on their island: peaches, pears, apples, oranges, or cherries. These fruits will grow all over the island on trees and can be picked and replanted to make even more of them. No fruit grants one island more power or rewards than another — they're all created equal, and the main battle for the more popular ones is purely down to aesthetics.

However, once players gain a little ground in the game, it doesn't matter what their native fruit is. There are ways they can have different fruits on the island, even all five. They could get rid of their native fruit altogether if that's what they're feeling! While it's not suggested to do that, foreign fruits do sell for more on players' islands than their native ones, so it's in their best interest to try and grow as many as possible. So how do players get these other fruits in Animal Crossing: New Horizons?

Updated on June 7, 2023, by Stephen LaGioia: After three years, Animal Crossing: New Horizons remains one of the most popular games for fans of the pleasant life sim genre. It may have peaked in new players during the pandemic, but there are still plenty of gamers seeking to build their perfect island getaway. The evergreen game remains as enticing as ever, having a whole wave of updates since its initial release, in addition to the delightful DLC, Happy Home Paradise. Among the biggest updates has been the addition of cooking.

With this comes a slew of unique dishes that New Horizons players can whip up in their kitchens. While some require ingredients that came along with the cooking update, others require the franchise's beloved staple — fruit. It's never been more valuable for players to grow every fruit variety on their island, so with that in mind, this list has been updated to include every way to get different fruit and fruit trees in Animal Crossing.

7 Take A Boat Tour With Kapp'n

As part of the massive 2.0 update (the last major one as confirmed by Nintendo) that introduced farming and cooking to Animal Crossing: New Horizons, the familiar face of Kapp'n returned to the game as well. Having been a recurring character from the beginning, many fans were delighted to see him feature in the latest title. Kapp'n docks his motorized boat at the end of a player's pier and, for 1000 Nook Miles, he'll take players to a mysterious island once a day.

These islands are unlike the ones accessed via Dodo Airlines and can be in completely different seasons and climates than players' own. Some islands also contain special items that players won't find elsewhere, like vines and glowing moss. Occasionally, Kapp'n will take players to islands that have palm trees that produce coconuts. These coconuts can be taken home and planted on players' beaches.

6 Take A Vacation To Collect Coconuts

While the Happy Home Paradise DLC emphasizes vacation settings, players can also create a pleasant tropical vacation vibe on their own island, by way of coconuts and palm trees. Coconuts are unique in that they are a universally non-native fruit, and yet anyone can obtain them fairly easily.

In order to get them, players will want to use a Nook Miles Ticket and pay a visit to a Mystery Island. Seek out a beach area and approach the coconut trees growing there. Shake these tropical palm trees, which will let loose one or two coconuts, and gather them. Players will then

Coconuts can be sold for 250 Bells per fruit. This is compared to native fruit, which goes for 100 Bells each, and non-native fruit, which sells for 500 Bells each.

5 Use Nook Miles Tickets To Visit Mystery Islands

A key item players can buy in Resident Services is a Nook Miles Ticket, which can be exchanged for 2000 Nook Miles using the ABD. Many players will be familiar with these tickets already for their use in dreamy villager hunting - a common Animal Crossing tactic to find the perfect villager. If players take a Nook Miles Ticket to the airport, Dodo Airlines will fly them to a deserted island nearby. These Mystery Islands aren't quite as unique as the ones visited with Kapp'n, but they are a great source of natural supplies.

Sometimes, these islands will also grow fruit that players can shake down from the trees. This occurs via random chance, but if one is lucky, a more bountiful island, such as the newly-added Crop Island, will turn up. These fruits will either be native or what is known as a sister fruit. This means that, unfortunately, not every fruit can be acquired with Nook Miles Tickets.

However, the good news is that most of these islands will also have coconuts, so be sure to pick up some of those too. And while finding an abundance of new fruits here is rare, this is a good alternative to getting non-native fruits without the need to coordinate with friends or online players.

Dig Up The Whole Tree

Whether visiting an island through Dodo Airlines or Kapp'n, players looking to get the most non-native fruits should bring a snack with them. In the game, eating gives players an extraordinary amount of strength; enough to smash rocks or dig up whole trees. With a good enough shovel and a snack, players can take whole trees from Mystery Islands home in their pocket.

Sure — the science of this mechanism doesn't truly add up, but it's certainly much quicker than waiting for a planted piece of fruit to regrow. With the addition of cooking to the game, too, players won't even need to sacrifice any of their own fruit to fill their pockets with non-native trees. Taking a whole tree back to plant also means that the new fruit will be available right away. This fruit can then be cooked, or planted to create more trees.

4 Get A Dodo Code From Online Communities

Dodo Codes are used to access another player's island either through local connection or online, and these can be a great way to get non-native fruit. Some online Animal Crossing communities will allow other players to post their Dodo Codes to invite visitors to their island. Players can join these communities and let others know they're searching for a particular fruit, or jump over to an open island to get what they're missing.

However, it's important to make sure the hosts are okay with players taking fruit. If someone is advertising their Dodo Code for another reason, and players just hop on over and start picking their fruit, that's not very considerate. While the fruit does grow back, this takes a few in-game days.

Animal Crossing communities often also have their own sets of rules about tipping, so players should be sure to research ahead on the expected etiquette. These online communities can be found on places like Reddit, Discord, or anywhere else on the web.

Set Up A Trade

Animal Crossing online communities are also great places to facilitate trading within the game. Given the random nature of DIY recipes and useful item drops, many sites have been set up for Animal Crossing fans to be able to get the things they haven't yet found. While they're often used to find furniture, art, or even DIYs, they can be used to get fruit too.

On many trading sites, people can post what they're willing to trade and what they'd like in return for it. Sometimes they may be looking for something similar in exchange, or they might also be after some extra Bells. As long as players aren't trading things for real money, they won't be breaking Nintendo's terms of service. Win-win!

3 Make Friends And Visit Their Island

Animal Crossing games are always better with friends and sharing is a core part of this cozy organization game. Whether friends are made in online communities or in the real world, Nintendo allows players to visit their friends' islands at any time of day. Visitors can go shopping, fishing, and even fruit picking to their heart's content, or they can pitch in and help with tasks on their friend's island.

Simply speak with Orville and inform him you want to fly. Players will then be given the option to jump into a friend's island that's currently accepting visitors. Then input the Dodo Code. Much like using Dodo Codes in online communities, it's important to make sure players' friends are okay with them taking the fruit. Especially if it's not native to the friend's island, as non-native fruits sell for a higher price in Nook's Cranny. With more Bells on the line, it's a good idea to ask first.

Ask To Take A Tree

Once players have visited someone's island, they'll be able to add them as a 'best friend' using the Best Friends List on the NookPhone. Being best friends with someone in the game will allow players greater freedom when visiting each other's islands. Only best friends will be able to strike stones, and trees, or dig on other players' islands.

This means that best friends will be able to dig up a tree on another island if they've eaten something. So, players should pack a snack the next time they head to a best friend's island as they might be kind enough to let them take a non-native fruit tree home.

2 Check The Mailbox

A letter from Mom to a player in Animal Crossing New Horizons

The letter system is a beloved feature of Animal Crossing games, and it allows players to communicate with their friends and villagers in incredibly personal ways. Letters can even be sent with a gift attached, which allows players to send their friends items without even having to visit their island. Fruits can be attached as a gift, and up to ten can be sent in one letter. So, if a player's friend happens to have a fruit they need, this is a great way to get it without the painfully long loading screens.

Occasionally, players will also receive a letter from their in-game mom. Mom is one of the best parents ever, as she'll send players sweet homemade items and messages of love. Every now and then, Mom will also send players a non-native fruit. It might be motivated by the desire to make sure her child is eating healthy, but it's also a great benefit for those looking to collect every fruit in the game.

1 Replant, Replant, Replant

The important thing about taking home fruit is to ensure that players replant plenty of it, to keep the non-native fruit flowing. When one tree has sprouted three apples, don't be tempted to sell them all just yet — plant them instead. It's well worth the time investment. Planting plenty of fruit will mean that players will have a thriving orchard in no time, with plenty of fruit ready to cook or sell.

Though it might be a shame to wait for the trees to grow before turning a profit, players will have a much bigger payout with many trees. Plus, with design elements being such an integral feature of the game, players can even use these trees to design farms or other fruit-filled areas on their island.

It's a good idea to isolate the specific non-native fruit trees in separate areas on the island, picking a large plot of land for all the trees. This will then turn into a colorful, yet organized, forest full of trees bearing different fruit, which will be easier and quicker to harvest when seeking out specific fruit to cook with.

Be Careful About Location

A tree sprout in Animal Crossing New Horizons

When wanting to get the most out of non-native fruits, players should be careful where they plant them. Getting the fruit itself is all well and good, but if it's planted in the wrong spot it'll remain a sapling and won't grow. Nothing is more disappointing than returning to the game expecting a lush fruit tree and finding a tiny sprout on the ground in the same space players left it.

Planting too close to a river or cliff won't allow fruit trees to grow, nor will planting them too close together. Trees need a clear tile of space on every side in order to thrive. Players should also consider the soil they plant their trees in, as standard fruit trees won't grow on sand, and coconut trees won't grow on grass. Planting fruit with care and consideration is the best way that players can maximize their output.
