Unlike the other mainline titles in the Animal Crossing series, Animal Crossing: New Horizons foregoes the process that generates what players' characters look like through a series of unrelated questions and just simply allows players to customize their character personally. Not only this, but players can additionally change their appearance completely at any point in the game by looking at a mirror.

With this in mind, not all customization options are readily available to players from the start of Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Baseline options such as eyes, mouths, and noses are all there, but hairstyles need to be unlocked via the Nook Stop and by using the mirror.

The items for unlocking these hairstyles are sold at the Nook Stop, thus they cost Nook Miles to obtain. These three items are Top 8 Pop Hairstyles, Top 8 Cool Hairstyles, and Top 8 Stylish Hair Colors. Note that the last items unlock more hair colors instead of hairstyles.

Top 8 Pop Hairstyles and Top 8 Cool Hairstyles both cost 2,400 Nook Miles each and Top 8 Stylish Hair Colors costs 3,000 Nook Miles. These can be obtained in any order. As clothes and hairstyles are not limited by gender in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, players are free to choose whichever style they like the best.

There are 7 other hairstyles to be unlocked at this point. The first 6 can be gotten just by using a mirror for the first time. The nooklings sometimes sell mirrors, and they also can be found via balloon presents. It doesn't matter what kind of mirror is used, as all of them function in the exact same way.

The secret 8th hairstyle is the bedhead style. This can only be unlocked if a player doesn't play the game for a week. Upon starting the game and leaving their home, the player's villager will exit their home with bedhead. They will quickly fix it, but the style can be changed back to in a mirror after unlocking it.

While technically not hairstyles, players can also receive wigs like the one shown in the above picture. They behave like helmet items, but the color of the wig's hair will change with the player's hair color. These can be received through balloon presents or the Able Sisters' Store.

Players have shown their creativity using the customization options in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, with many players recreating their favorite fictional characters. With the number of options available to players, a lot of interesting islands are sure to turn heads online.
