Animal Crossing: New Horizons is filled with all sorts of bugs and fish to sell and donate to the museum, but there's a valuable fish that's only available between December and May known as an Oarfish. Finding it by chance is an exciting and possibly frightening encounter due to its extremely large size for many players, but finding it more than once is a very good opportunity for players to line their pockets with loads of bells.

Fishing in Animal Crossing: New Horizons is the same as the other mainline titles in the Animal Crossing franchise, except with the addition of players having to craft their own tools. These tools are breakable and after fishing enough times, most fishing rods will break, so players should have more rods either nearby or at least the materials to craft more before going on the hunt for Oarfish.

One other item for players to bring along on their Oarfish fishing trip is Fish Bait. This can be crafted from the Manila Clams that are burrowed under the beaches. They appear as little black dots that spit out water in the same way as Gulliver's Communicator Parts. There's no need for players to worry about not having the recipe for Fish Bait, as the recipe is automatically given to players upon digging up their first Manila Clam. As the name suggests, it will automatically spawn fish to be caught in the waters where thrown.

Animal Crossing New Horizons Oarfish Caught Tank

Oarfish are worth 9000 bells each when sold normally and can be found at any time during the months they're available. When searching for them, they will only be caught from large fish shadows in the sea. It's best to ignore the smaller shadows and bait the waters when no large fish are able to be found. However, even if players get a bite from a large fish, it doesn't mean they have a guaranteed Oarfish. As in many other Animal Crossing titles, the most common fish in the sea from those large shadows is the infamous Sea Bass. However, they still sell for 400 bells, so it's not a complete tragedy to catch them, as bells are bells.

Other valuable fish include Barred Knifejaw, Blue Marlin, Coelacanth, Football Fish, Hammerhead Shark, Napoleonfish, Ocean Sunfish, and many more waiting to be discovered.

After enough patience and broken rods, players should have at least one Oarfish, or at least an inventory filled with fish to sell. Either way, fishing is a great way for players to earn bells for furniture and debt payments. With Animal Crossing: New Horizons being so new, it's perfectly fine for players to take their own pace with playing and just enjoy their island life in ways that they deem fit.
