On October 15, Nintendo will be dedicating a whole Direct to Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Although it is one of many games to get fans through the early pandemic, many fans have already moved on to other games. Perhaps, however, the right type of content and more regular updates for Animal Crossing: New Horizons will bring fans back en masse. That’s likely the goal, at least.
One thing fans are already aware of, notably, is the return of Brewster and his cafe, “The Roost.” Fans are anticipating his addition to the game, as well as an update on his content at the aforementioned Animal Crossing: New Horizons Direct. He’ll likely have a few new details, but much of his past iterations—the Cafe, the coffee, and notably, the Pigeon Milk—will likely return. Yet, the truth behind Brewster’s Pigeon Milk may be a little sweeter and a lot grosser than fans originally knew or new fans could possibly conceive of.
Animal Crossing’s Brewster and The Roost
Brewster is a fan-favorite Animal Crossing villager, whose name is a play on Coffee+Rooster despite the fact that he’s a pigeon. He runs the Roost, a coffee shop, wherein Animal Crossing: New Leaf players can take a part-time job working in his shop for coffee beans. While his relationship with the character and his general role may change slightly in Animal Crossing: New Horizons (but there's no removing him from the cafe life), it’s worth noting that one thing almost guaranteed to return is his occasional offer of Pigeon Milk.
It’s simple enough to think of this as a joke, given that pigeons (and thus Brewster) cannot actually produce milk, and many may not put any more thought into it than that. As NintendoLife points out, however, Pigeon Milk is a real thing and could be a sign that Brewster cares about the Animal Crossing player.
Animal Crossing – What Is Pigeon Milk?
Various animals care for their offspring differently. Mammals are capable of providing milk, some animals will teach their offspring to hunt, and others will have natural instincts for survival and can be left alone from birth. Many birds, however, feed their offspring by regurgitating food. NintendoLife notes that this is called “Crop Milk” and found that this regurgitation comes from a bird’s stomach lining, consisting of “semi-solid substances somewhat like pale yellow cottage cheese.” For a pigeon, though, this regurgitation is referred to as "Pigeon Milk." Brewster, in short, is offering to regurgitate into a player’s coffee, which sounds disgusting. On the other hand, this is a nurturing mechanism, potentially indicating Brewster’s care for the player, but that definitely doesn't mean it has to be accepted.
Either way, it may be something players should keep in mind when Brewster is added to Animal Crossing: New Horizons. It’s just a game, sure, but the thought of drinking a pigeon’s regurgitation is going to be a bit more than many players can potentially handle.
To Drink Pigeon Milk or Not to Drink Pigeon Milk, That Is The Question
It'll be interesting to see how far Animal Crossing: New Horizons goes with Brewster in the game, but it stands to reason that he may offer more than just the standard coffee. Cafes, after all, have changed a lot over the past few years. Brewster already offered alternatives like hot chocolate on Valentine's Day in some games, so it may be updated to the point where players can have a wider selection of drinks. Seasonal updates/events are perfect for his cafe, but so is expanding his business with new drinks. The October 15 direct will likely have more information on this, but however the selection/cafe is expanded, Pigeon Milk won't be on the main menu.
It'll still likely be something Brewster saves for special occasions, and whether they accept it or not is something players will have to deal with if they spend enough time there. Players will just have to navigate their personal feelings for Brewster, his "milk," and more later this year, but hopefully, Brewster's cafe is still taken to the next level.
