Everyone has well and truly got their teeth into the huge 2.0 update for Animal Crossing: New Horizons after its early release, and many an island is undergoing an overhaul. But with so many new features, it's been easy to miss some.

We all know the big changes - The Roost café is open for business, villagers can now farm and cook food, and Kapp'n has returned to ferry players to new islands. There are so, so, many more updates and additions that Nintendo kept quiet that it is hard to form a concise list - here are the overlooked changes to Animal Crossing: New Horizons that players may not have even found yet.

10 Previous Characters Can Be Invited To The Roost

The Roost café has always played host to villagers - in New Leaf, villagers and special characters could come in and request a specific type of coffee, or be perched at the bar taking a well-deserved break from work.

New Horizons is no different. Occasionally, characters will wander in for some respite. Amiibo cards can summon any visitor that players want to the café - including older NPCs that have not officially returned: Gracie, Pete, and Dr. Shrunk to name a few. Interestingly, some characters will bring others with them. Joan will bring Daisy-Mae, and Pelly or Phyllis will likely bring the other to enjoy the scene.

9 You Can Store DIYs

The Happy Home Academy can at long last get off all of our backs about having 'trash' lying around in our homes: DIY cards can be put into the storage of players' homes. No longer will there be patches of cards strewn about on beaches, or precious floorspace overrun in the houses.

This is just in time as there are swathes of new DIY's available in the game, from furniture to food to fences. The new storage shed items can help with this, as if someone needs to whip out a spare DIY card, they can access their storage by the portable sheds.

8 Isabelle's Announcement Has Been Amended

Isabelle, everyone's favorite little helper, now has an actual purpose. For months now her morning announcements have been lackluster, and omitting important information; only ever mentioning when its' a villager's birthday or if someone is staying at the campsite.

Now, Isabelle's sprightly speeches include any merchant or special visitor characters that have made their way to the island on any given day. For instance, if Kicks has set up shop in the Plaza, she will mention it - or that Saharah is roaming around with their carpets in hand.

7 Harriet The Hairdresser's Service Is Back

Hey, Shug! Harriet is back on Harvey's co-op with sharpened scissors. She doesn't require any hard-earned Bells to get her up and running, which is nice. Players can sit down in her chair and receive a fresh new hairstyle for free. And, if it's something you're not happy with, she will undo it right there for free as well.

The hairstyles that are given out will be remembered by the player and can be chosen at any vanity or mirror item after a visit to Harriet.

6 The New Villagers Are NOT In The DLC

This topic has been up for debate since the 2.0 update and Happy Home Paradise DLC came out. The fact that the two were released almost simultaneously did not help to clear any confusion.

It appears that the eighteen new villagers are in fact connected to the 2.0 update for Animal Crossing New Horizons, NOT the new DLC. They appear on mystery islands or in campsites (or from Amiibo cards if one is lucky enough to get some). It was thought that they were from the DLC as they were shown in its' trailer, but it looks like they are available to those without it.

5 Cooking Recipes Come From Everywhere

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it's a balloon with another DIY recipe in it. But this time, it is a food recipe. Along with being able to buy the basic meal recipes from Nook's Cranny, players will start finding them all over their islands.

Cooking recipes can come in bottles washed up on the beach, and from villagers in their houses - just as they hand out furniture item cards. Also, catching certain fish or deep-sea 'creatures' will give the player an idea for a recipe using that fish.

4 Kapp's Boat Tours Are Something To Make A Song And Dance About

The rolling waves of the sea are at last explorable thanks to Kappn's Mystery Boat tours' return. Players knew about this appreciated resurrection, but what they didn't know was some fun extra tidbits. While on the boat, Kapp'n sings his age-old songs, but players can now clap along, and perform reactions during them. Encore! This also includes being able to skip his show and go straight back to the mainland, if the harmony is getting a little boring.

It also turns out that some of the islands are themed: players have discovered vegetable islands, mushroom islands, and even a meteor shower isle.

3 Celeste Has New DIYs

Something that Nintendo kept very quiet in their Direct was that everyone's favorite night owl Celeste is now giving out even more recipes. So far, fans have discovered that they can get recipes for a star fragment-shaped rug, and the coveted starry-skies rug, too. There are likely to be more, but players will have to wait and see which they get.

Interestingly, on certain mystery islands, there are star fragments littering the beaches and rocks. On these particular islands, Celeste's recipes also wash up in bottles on the beaches.

2 Automatic Bell Dispensers Are Here

Finally. Players don't have to sprint back to Resident Services to retrieve some Bells. One of the new Nook Miles Rewards is an ABD - Automatic Bell Dispenser - machine. These can be customized and placed anywhere on the islands. There is also a new ABD available on Harv's Island, once the co-op he has created is up and running.

The best thing, though, is that these ABD's work on other people's islands. If players fancy going for a shopping spree, they can borrow the machines on others' islands to take out extra cash.

1 Decoration And Furniture Updates

One of the huge draws of the new update is the sheer amount of new items that it has brought into the game (not to mention the additions coming with the Happy Home Paradise DLC, too).

With just the update, there are some new features: when searching an inventory, players can now sort and choose by item type in each menu - for instance, tables, chairs, or beds. The rug section has also had a nice change in that it shows the dimensions of each carpet now. Perhaps the best thing, though, is the ability to make an accent wall in any room by pressing X on a wallpaper.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons was released on March 20, 2020, and is available on Nintendo Switch.
