Part of the fun of the Nintendo Switch's latest big hit, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, is enjoying your island life with your animal residents. There are currently 391 animals that can potentially move onto your island. It's mostly luck of the draw who you get, though if you're fortunate enough to have amiibo cards then you can always choose who moves in.

There are eight different personality types that each resident might be, four male types and four female types. Personalities determine how the animals act as well as what they might talk about. The official companion guide states that each resident additionally has two subtype personalities. So although they might be categorized as one personality, they may show traits of two others. Additionally, if you want to collect all reactions then set emotes can only be learned from specific personalities. Here we take a look at the different personalities and how this makes the animals act.

8 Male: Lazy

The lazy personality type is cuter than you might think. These residents are known for their daydreaming, often talking about the bugs in their floor chatting with them, and coming up with wild ideas.  These animals have a love of food, superheroes, and roller-coasters, often making them seem a little childish, but not in a bad way. Their cute personality comes across as endearing.

Some fan favorite characters such as Lucky and Bob fall into this category, but if you're set on getting one of them via an amiibo card then it might set you back a fair amount as certain cards are selling for more than the game itself. These animals are rather easy-going and get along well with other lazy types, as well as normal, cranky, and big sis types.

7 Female: Sweet (Normal)

This personality type can sometimes be referred to as either "sweet" or "normal", so this list states it as both to be clear. These adorable animals love cooking and knitting, as well as poetry and reading. This means you might find them sitting down somewhere quiet on your island with a good book.

Fan favorites of this personality type include Goldie, Coco, and Merengue. If you happen to have Animal Crossing: Amiibo Festival in your collection, it came with a Goldie amiibo that is compatible with Animal Crossing: New Horizons. They get along well with other normal personalities, as well as smug and lazy villagers.

6 Male: Cranky

The cranky personality animals aren't as bad-tempered as you might think. These animals tend to give you life advice, drawing on their own wisdom as they walk down memory lane and relive their memories with you. This personality type also likes bonsai trees.

Notable fan favorites in this category include Wolfgang, Elvis, Kabuki, and Fang. Those with this personality type tend to have deep voices and do not get along as well with peppy, smug, and big sis type villagers. However, they bond well with others of the same personality, as well as snooty and jock types.

5 Female: Snooty

The snooty personality type is all about art, fashion, shopping, and spas. They'll often talk to you about what you're wearing and will usually sport high-end clothing themselves. Though they can sometimes come across as mean towards both the player and other residents, these self-centered animals are still lovable in their own way.

Fan favorites of this type include Ankha, Pecan, and Whitney. Though they usually get along fine with both cranky and smug personality types, they'll often struggle to play nice with any of the other personalities. You might find your snooty villager being a bit of bully to your other residents. Unsurprisingly, the anteater resident named Snooty lives up to their namesake and has a snooty personality.

4 Male: Smug

Smug residents can be very self-centered and full of themselves. Unsurprisingly, they have big egos and one of their favorite topics of discussion is themselves. However, they still make for great neighbors and will also talk with you about music, fashion, fame, or travel.

Fan favorites of this personality include Marshal, Shep, Raymond, and Julian. Smug residents generally get along with other smug animals, as well as peppy, normal, and lazy animals. On the other hand, they may struggle to make friends with big sis, cranky, and jock types.

3 Female: Big Sis (Sisterly)

The big sis personality type is also sometimes referred to as the sisterly type. These animals enjoy gardening and the countryside, so you'll often find them watering your plants as well as talking to you about their favorite hobbies. They also like crafts and are strong family-oriented animals, hence their personality name. This type of resident is considered to be the easiest to raise your friendship levels with. Once befriended with the player, big sis types will look after them, giving life advice and even medicine if you speak to them when you have been stung.

Fan favorites of this personality type include Cherry, Tammy, and Muffy. Big sis types tend to get along with peppy, smug, lazy, and jock types, as well as other big sis types. They don't get along with snooty or cranky animals.

2 Male: Jock

Jocks live up to their personality type and are very passionate about all sports. They are often found working out and are known to give the player exercise and other sporting advice. They'll speak to you about their hobbies and ask you about your own exercise regimes.

Some fan favorites of this personality type include Genji, Kid Cat, and Sterling. Jock animals get along with peppy, big sis, cranky, and normal villagers, but do not care for snooty or lazy animals. If you find jock types talking to snooty or lazy residents, they may end up arguing and get angry as a result.

1 Female: Peppy

The peppy personality type loves singing and dancing, so you'll often find them happily crooning on your island. They also like fashion and pop stars and will eagerly talk to you about their favorite topics. These animals can also come across as a little child-like, but that just makes them even cuter.

Fan favorites of this type include Audie, Cookie, Bluebear, and Tangy. These animals get along with normal, lazy, and jock personality types. Peppy animals are more than willing to chat with any other personality type, but they may easily become the targets of gossip by snooty and cranky villagers.
