There's so much freedom in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Players can create just about any type of island and customize their home to their leisure, provided they have the right materials, of course. With so much furniture available and custom designs, there's really no real limit to just how creative people can get.

That said, this abundance of ideas can result in not knowing which theme to go for in the first place. The best way to get inspired is to just look at what other players are doing with their homes or islands. Here's just a few incredible house designs by talented players with a strong vision.

10 80s Retro

The whole 80s retro style has definitely been making a come back in recent years, and Netflix series like Stranger Things are definitely proof of that trend. Reddit user jinglethecat was also heavily inspired by this era when creating this awesome throwback room.

Inspired by E.T. main character Elliot's room in particular, they were able to bring to life that bright, vibrant 80s vibe with all the right objects. It definitely looks like the room from the movie!

9 Night Glow

Is the idea of having a darkened room with tons of cool lights tempting? Well, it's actually much easier to achieve than one would imagine. With all sorts of shiny items in the game, the perfect glowing room is possible, as shown by Reddit user empresscornbread.

Inspired by the idea of making a rave room, the house is filled with little blue star fragments, lava lamps, and the moon lamp. Make sure to speak to Celeste on clear nights to earn the recipe for night sky themed items.

8 Detective's Den

For those wanting to tell a story or to have a very clear, almost movie-like theme, why not turn the house into a full on detective's den and dress up as one? This investigation room was brilliantly furnished and designed by Reddit user mypotbelly.

Many of the items here are really easy to get from the shop, since they're mostly common items and have a low price tag. Sky's the limit with this concept, but the best part has to be the photos of the suspicious villagers at the top.

7 Mermaid Cave

Many of the recipes that utilize shells are pretty nice and somewhat underrated. Thankfully, with summer around, more and more players have been showcasing their maritime themed houses, like this one by Reddit user bizzybeefleas.

Almost everything here belongs to the same collection, which is why it looks so gorgeous. It really does seem like the cave or castle of a mermaid living at the bottom of the sea.

6 Modern Brick

If themed houses are a bit too much work or just flashy & fantastical, there are some regular themes that are definitely worth pursuing as well. One of the best ones has to be this modern brick theme, showcased by PinkBananaBlue.

The player started off with a simple concept: a studio apartment. From there on, they were able to create a really nice and consistent theme that looks believable while filled with small, cool details.

5 Minimalist White

For a brighter, modern, cleaner theme, user001414 picked a few central colors to complete their house and did a fantastic job at it. This girly minimalist white house theme is both cosy and bright.

It also uses some cool hacks such as putting two desks side by side to create the illusion of a longer desk. Plus, it's nice to see the log furniture actually being used to their full potential while actually looking good.

4 Traditional Japanese

Although it's a pretty popular theme, it's always very impressive to see detailed and well-made houses that stick firmly to the traditional Japanese aesthetic. This house in particular by acnh.sidney is just such a pleasure to look at, with all its detail.

Everything is simple and zen in their house, so much so that some of the furniture has been customized to better fit the neutral color scheme of the home. This might be a popular concept, but it's clearly for a good reason.

3 Dark Panel

It might be tempting to go for a bright look when it comes to a house, but some of the darker themes look quite breathtaking. Lazyqueenie for instance wanted to go for a more boho, hipster style aesthetic.

This living room uses the garden chairs and tables in a very believable manner, incorporating modern decoration with older, antique style furniture seamlessly. The lesson here is to never hesitate mixing different eras together.

2 Pastel And Silver

Pastel themes are another popular niche for players, and the mermaid set is absolutely fantastic for it. Lara Crossing showcases it well in her exceptionally pink and cute bedroom where everything abides by the same color rules.

There's also a few items that seem to belong to the winter collection coming up later this year, which gives the room a silvery, pastel sheen. For the ultimate princess themed house, this is just perfection embodied.

1 Bubblegum K. K.

Sometimes abiding by the rule of having a sole color for a single room might feel too stifling. Not to worry, because mixing things up confidently can be the very thing that really brings the look of a room together, as seen in this design by ac_island.

All things cute and colorful are located in this room, but they don't all necessarily have to be pink, which is why this room is so good in the first place.
