When Rovio announced that in a few short weeks they would be rolling out their next version of Angry Birds, Angry Birds Space, we knew it was money in the bank. But, with Angry Birds having been a mainstay of the Android and App Store's inner circle for quite some time there was some uncertainty as to just how popular this extraterrestrial title would be.
Well, as it turns out, Angry Birds is still extremely popular -- as Angry Birds Space has rocketed to the number one spot, knocking off the current king Draw Something. Despite a preconceived notion that Angry Birds doesn't evolve all that much, this Space iteration has shown that Rovio is willing to evolve their core concept and deliver something fresh and exciting for fans.
Early trailers for the game might have focused on the humorous side of the property, but as we neared launch and saw more of what the game had to offer, it became apparent that Angry Birds Space was going to be a huge seller on all platforms. Unfortunately, when the game launched, Windows 7 phones were left with vanilla Angry Birds rather than the shiny new Space version.
Some news sources were reporting that Rovio was going to bypass Windows Phone 7 with Angry Birds Space, but Rovio boss Peter Vesterbacka has quickly dispelled that rumor. Sure, developing for the WP7 platform is much more of a commitment, Vesterbacka says that it essentially means developing the game all over again, but it's hard to overlook that Angry Birds is also number one on the Windows Phone app store.
Our guess, based on the success of Angry Birds Space just on the iOS, PC, and Android platforms, is that Rovio will be more than willing to develop for Windows phones. It might take a while for the title to expand, much like the first one did to Facebook and Google+, but Windows Phone 7 owners shouldn't be worried about being denied the thrills of launching birds through space.
How have you been liking Angry Birds Space? Any Windows Phone 7 users out there who are dying to get their hands on Angry Birds Space?
Angry Birds Space is available now for iOS and Android devices.
