'Angry Birds' Becomes Best Selling PSN Title

Angry Birds for the PS3 and PSP

Despite its relatively recent release, Angry Birds for PlayStation Network has become the most downloaded game of all time on Sony's online store. This might not come as a surprise to anyone who lives above ground, as the iPhone phenomenon has now spread to almost every piece of electronic equipment imaginable and received countless downloads on each and every one of them.

Angry Birds came to the PSN just four short months ago. That's over four years after the online service launched in November of 2006. This is not only good news for Rovio, but a huge step forward for casual gaming on the consoles. This is probably a good time to recall that the business head who predicted the impending death of console games is now leading the pack in sales with his company's game on Sony's doomed console.

Colin Sebastian, an analyst at Lazard Capital Markets, discussed in detail the rising popularity of the PlayStation Network, as well as what these Angry Birds sales mean for the future of the service:

"Online continues to ramp on PSN. The PSN currently has 75M registered accounts WW (half of which are in NA), with over 1.4B pieces of content downloaded since launch. PSN appears to be gaining traction tapping into the casual and social gaming market with titles such as Angry Birds which is the most downloaded game through the PSN (it was launched in January 2011). PSN is also seeing good success with freemium/microtransaction models[.]"

He continued to add that both casual and traditional game publishers should understand that this is a significant move in the right direction for the PS3's continued growth. Considering the fact that we will not likely be seeing a PS4 any time soon, growth is vital to the survival of this current generation of consoles. In other words, not only is Rovio generating significant revenue for Sony, they are giving consoles further life by helping to bring the casual market to the consoles.
