It looks like Phil Lord and Chris Miller are finally back in the director’s chair for the film adaptation of the new book from The Martian author, Andy Weir. The duo were unceremoniously dropped from their previous directorial effort, Solo: A Star Wars Story, due to ‘creative differences’ with Lucasfilm and replaced by Ron Howard.

Weir has become a hot commodity since Ridley Scott’s take on his debut novel, The Martian, pulled in over $630 million at the worldwide box office and an impressive nine Academy Award nominations. His latest literary effort isn’t due to release until Spring 2021, but the gears are already turning on the film treatment. In keeping with the theme from his previous book, Weir’s new story follows an astronaut charged with saving the planet.

Lord and Miller haven’t directed a completed film since 2014’s 22 Jump Street, but the two have remained busy since then. Aside from producing a trio of Lego films, they also picked up the Best Animated Feature Oscar for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. They are currently producing the upcoming animated science fiction comedy, Connected, from Sony Pictures Animation.

Ryan Gosling will be joining Lord and Miller on their new space voyage in what appears to be his second consecutive role as an astronaut. Gosling was last seen playing Neil Armstrong in Damien Chazelle’s First Man. No other information is available now, but this is definitely a project to keep an eye on. Fingers crossed that Lord and Miller can see this one over the finish line.
