The following article contains spoilers for Spider-Man: No Way Home.

After months of denying it, the cat is out of the bag that Andrew Garfield does in fact return as Peter Parker in Spider-Man: No Way Home. He was also joined by the original web-slinger, Tobey Maguire, along with the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Spider-Man, Tom Holland. While he obviously couldn’t talk about it prior to the film’s release, Garfield has finally opened up about why he returned to the Spider-Man franchise.

Fans had been theorizing about multiple heroes in Spider-Man: No Way Home long before the film premiered. Many were convinced that Garfield and Maguire would arrive in the film, courtesy of the activation of the Multiverse, and assist Holland’s Spider-Man in saving the world. The theories were spot on, and fans were ecstatic to see the two actors return. For Garfield, the idea was “immediately undeniable,” and he couldn’t say no.

In an interview with Variety, Garfield revealed that producer Amy Pascal, Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige, and director Jon Watts came to him with the idea of multiple Spider-Men in one film and it “sounded incredibly fun.” As a fan of the franchise and character himself, “just the idea of seeing three Spider-Men in the same frame was enough” for Garfield and he was immediately on board. Of course he then had to lie about his involvement in Spider-Man: No Way Home for months.

When working out his role for Spider-Man: No Way Home, the studio and Garfield spoke a lot about the concept of brotherhood, and making the three heroes act like siblings. “You come to realize that you’ve never been alone and there are other brothers going through the exact same thing,” Garfield stated in the interview. "That’s a big spiritual journey to go on, man."

Maguire, Garfield, and Holland were on set together for about two weeks, and in Garfield’s opinion, the three managed to achieve “something cosmically beautiful.” Such was their bond that Garfield improvised the “I love you guys” line in Spider-Man: No Way Home.

As part of the interview, Garfield also revealed the hilarious fact about Holland being jealous of his Spider-Man suit because it had zippers that allowed Garfield to get his hands out easily to use his phone. Holland, on the other hand, “had to use his nose because he couldn’t access his hands.”
