Andrew Garfield made waves over the course of 2021 with the release of projects including The Eyes of Tammy Faye, tick, tick...BOOM!, and, Spider-Man: No Way Home. After months of denying any involvement with the Marvel Studios project, Garfield finally sat down to discuss what the return to the superhero world was like.

Garfield's return to the superhero world in Spider-Man: No Way Home followed Garfield's previous portrayal of Spider-Man throughout The Amazing Spider-Man films. To date, Garfield is the only actor of his Spider-Man: No Way Home co-stars not to receive a third installment in his own franchise. Fortunately, No Way Home gave Garfield some of the closure he needed.

In speaking with Variety about not only No Way Home but also Garfield's stunning performance in tick, tick... BOOM!, Garfield discussed what working with both Tobey Maguire and Tom Holland was like for him. In fact, Garfield revealed that in Spider-Man: No Way Home, he improvised one line that has captured the hearts of many. "There's a line I improvised in the movie, looking at [Maguire and Holland] and I tell them I love them," Garfield said. "That was just me loving them." Garfield also discussed what the film meant to his own version of Spider-Man, including the memorable scene where he saves MJ from a nearly lethal fall. "I will say the image of my catching MJ -- that was really beautiful and it kind of sold me on the whole thing," Garfield said. The scene is a callback to Garfield's Amazing Spider-Man 2 where Gwen ultimately fell to her death.

With that, Garfield also discussed how surreal the experience for him was as both an actor and a fan of Spider-Man. Garfield recalled that when he was first contacted by Amy Pascal, Kevin Feige, and Jon Watts, the opportunity to return as Spider-Man was hard to pass up. "It was immediately undeniable," Garfield said. "It sounded incredibly fun, incredibly spiritual -- trippy and thematically interesting. On a base level, as a Spider-Man fan, just the idea of seeing three Spider-Men in the same frame was enough."

When asked what it felt like to come back to the character after a rather heartbreaking experience with The Amazing Spider-Man, Garfield could only mention how grateful he was. "It was joyful, and a feeling of closure for me," Garfield said. "There was so many unanswered questions for my Peter, where we left it. I got to step back in and get some healing for him." For Garfield, there were numerous instances of fate and events that he describes as "cosmically beautiful," and what is seen throughout No Way Home only scratches the surface.

The emotional performance Garfield gave to No Way Home led many fans to advocate for the revival of The Amazing Spider-Man 3. When asked about whether he would return to the role, Garfield agreed, but with a catch. "I mean, yes, definitely open to something if it felt right," Garfield said. He went on to say that if ever given the opportunity to tell more of Peter's emotional story, "I would have to feel very sure and certain in myself." While there appear to be no current plans to incorporate the Spider-Men into the MCU again, Marvel is always full of surprises.

Spider-Man: No Way Home is now in theaters.
