With Spider-Man: No Way Home rounding out Marvel Studios' theatrical releases for 2021, many fans are convinced that it's going to be the most epic MCU title to come out this year. Even Tom Holland himself has said that the Spidey threequel may be the most ambitious standalone superhero movie ever made and that the script is unlike anything he's ever seen before.

So far, the bulk of Phase 4 has been all about alternate realities and temporal themes. WandaVision started to explore the multiverse in greater detail, while The Falcon and the Winter Soldier set the stage for Disney Plus' Loki series, which will undoubtedly be very time-travel heavy. With that in mind, all of the signs seem to point at No Way Home being some sort of massive multiverse enterprise, featuring all sorts of mind-blowing crossovers and cameos from other Spider-Man and MCU properties.

Several reports have already confirmed the return of a few classic villains from Sony's previous Spider-Man movies, including Alfred Molina's Doctor Octopus, Jamie Foxx's Electro, and potentially even Willem Dafoe's Green Goblin. Surely, that would be too much for Holland's Spider-Man to handle all by himself, so Marvel presumably has plans to introduce some allies into the story to even out the playing field. The very prospect of such a team-up brings to mind Sony's Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which focuses on Miles Morales' journey to becoming the web-slinger while he helps fellow masked heroes from alternate worlds return to their respective universes.

But who could be the allies for Holland's Peter Parker? Some fans are theorizing that Spider-Man stars Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield will end up reprising their respective Peter Parker roles in No Way Home and participate in an epic Spider-Verse showdown against the group of villains, but such theory hasn't been confirmed as of yet. Even Garfield himself is skeptical of the Spider-Verse concept. In a recent interview with Josh Horowitz on his Happy Sad Confused podcast, Garfield said he'd been eyeing the rumors on Twitter over the past few months with raised eyebrows. "It's so crazy. Dude, it's f—ing hilarious to me," he told Horowitz, saying that he wishes he could just speak to everyone and say, "I recommend that you chill."

When Horowitz insisted he give a straight yes-or-no answer to whether he was involved in Spider-Man: No Way Home at all, Garfield simply said: "I would have gotten a call by now, that's all I'm saying." Is Garfield just playing coy to avoid spoiling a huge surprise, or does he really have no idea what's going on with Marvel and No Way Home?

At this point, we don't know what or who to believe. Fans will just have to wait for Christmas time to find out what Marvel has up its sleeve.

Spider-Man: No Way Home premieres in theatres this December 17.
