Some Star Wars fans have started feeling understandably burnt out on the franchise's seemingly endless stream of content these days. Compared to the old days when a new trilogy was generation-defining news, a new show in a year where there are already several can feel a bit overwhelming, but not to Dave Filoni.
Filoni, the mind behind such beloved Star Wars shows as The Clone Wars and The Mandalorian (the latter of which he developed alongside Jon Favreau), has a more favorable outlook. In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, he and Favreau spoke about how their shows (including the upcoming Ahsoka) tie in with the rest. Filoni appeared particularly impressed with how much the new series are starting to branch out in terms of storytelling and vibe.
"We love seeing the development of all these series and how from the new show we're doing with Jon Watts, Skeleton Crew," Filoni said. "But when you look at Andor and you look at Obi-Wan [Kenobi], you look at [The Mandalorian], you look at [The Book of Boba Fett]. They all do have a different feeling, a different tone, and I think that's remarkable, and really speaks to the serialized nature of Star Wars, and how it can be a very flexible galaxy." It's understandable how some might think there's too much of the same in Star Wars lately. But with movies like Rian Johnson's The Last Jedi and potentially unique new takes like Andor, it looks like things are really starting to branch out.
"I mean, it is a galaxy, so there's so many stories to tell that it's exciting. But I don't know yet," Filoni admitted. "I'm waiting to see a little more as I put together what that tone becomes, because it's evolving right now. It's evolving." He's right, of course. There's no way to tell at the moment where things are going. All that can be done is to see how it turns out. Naturally, seeing as Filoni is Lucasfilm's Executive Creative Director, he's got a bit more control over where it all goes.
It makes sense that Filoni would want to express how confident he is in the various Star Wars shows going forward. Many fans believe that there's a lot that The Book of Boba Fett and Obi-Wan Kenobi could have done better, and some likely feel that there isn't much to offer creatively from the franchise right now. But how can the various creators fix that feeling of just spinning the wheels?
Well, if Filoni's enthusiasm is anything to go by, it looks like they're already working to do just that. There's no telling how Andor and Ahsoka will turn out, but hey, with so many shows in the pipeline, something's bound to stick, right?
Star Wars: Andor is set to drop its first 3 episodes on September 21st, 2022, on Disney Plus.
