The new survival game Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey puts players in the shoes of a baby primate and asks them to navigate a dangerous world. Players must claw their way up the food chain in order to protect and grow their clan. Ancestors comes from the creator of the Assassin's Creed series, but goes in a totally different direction.
Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey doesn't hold the player’s hand, which can lead to difficulty in learning the game’s systems, like combat. But with a few tips, players will find themselves evolving in no time.
The player character in Ancestors can dodge attacks, which comes in handy when going up against dangerous predators. But it doesn't work as swiftly as most action games. To dodge, players must plan ahead, hold down the dodge button, and wait for an audio cue. Players can also attack, provided they have a tool equipped. Attacks work the same way as dodges. Players hold the button, wait for the audio cue, and release.
The player can evolve these skills by maturing their neurons. Evolution serves as the game's upgrade system. If players develop scent, sound, and intelligence, they can have a better chance to get jump on the enemy.
In order to attack, players must use tools. Players can alter early tools in the game to make them more deadly and effective. For example, they can peel the back off of a stick and sharpen it with a rock to create a much more dangerous pointed implement. Players can also smash rocks together to create a grinder and then use it to bludgeon enemies.
Players should look beyond their immediate toolset for help in difficult encounters as well. Lure one animal into the vicinity of another animal and they may do battle. Also players should make sure to upgrade their mimic function in order to better equip their clanmates.
Finally, if the player's character does get damaged in Ancestors, the player can heal by searching for medicinal fiber in trees. They can also eat snails to counteract snake venom, and sleep away broken bones.
Reviewers have found Ancestor: The Humankind Odyssey perplexing, but hopefully these tips will give players a shot at a decent future for their clan.
