Many players in Animal Crossing: New Horizons are excited about being able to jump off their islands and go for a swim in the game's most recent July update. This update gives players access to the wet suit item that lets them enter the water and explore around up to a point.

Swimming isn't a new thing introduced to the series in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. It is actually a feature introduced back in Animal Crossing: New Leaf.

However, since this update seems very themed toward the summer, time-traveling players and players in the southern hemisphere may wonder if they will be able to explore their island's coasts. After all, swimming in the winter's cold doesn't seem safe or healthy for ordinary people.

ACNH Diving

It would be awful if Nintendo released a feature for Animal Crossing: New Horizons during a month where half of the world wouldn't be able to even access it without time traveling or waiting. Thankfully, players should be happy that swimming and diving aren't season-locked to any specific season, and players can go out into the sea any time of day or year. While this isn't recommended for most players in real life, hypothermia isn't a worry in Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

In actuality, players are recommended to go swimming at all times of the year due to the new and different sea creatures introduced in this update having different seasonal spawns. Some creatures, like the snow crab and red king crab, only spawn in the water during the colder months. Of course, many of these creatures are also valuable, making them a great source of bells while it seems that there aren't too many bell sources available on players' islands.

Players worried about not encountering Pascal in the winter don't need to worry. Pascal can appear all year due to scallops being available all year.

If players do go out swimming during winter, they have the opportunity to see a cute and short little animation of their villager shivering from the cold after getting out of the water. This doesn't mean anything negative, but it's a nice detail nonetheless.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons is available now for Nintendo Switch.
