Seemingly out of nowhere, Among Us has exploded in popularity and looks to be one of the next big multiplayer games on the market. Developed by InnerSloth, a small 3 persona development team, Among Us’ newfound recognition has led to an abundance of new players. The game itself is simple enough. Groups of 4-10 players interact with one of three available maps, one group of crewmates tasked with completing odd jobs, and a smaller group of 1-3 impostors tasked with covertly eliminating the various crewmates. Crewmates must – upon discovery of a body or via emergency meeting – deduce which of the players are traitors. If all impostors are voted out then crewmates win, if the impostors manage to survive up until there’s an equal amount of impostors to crewmates, they win.

Playing impostor can be fun, but stressful at times. It can be quite difficult depending on how many players are in the lobby, and how many other impostors there are roaming around. That being said, where there’s a will, there’s a way. While impostors are naturally at a disadvantage, there are measures players can take to ensure that they have the best possible chance of coming out on top.

10 Create An Alibi

This is easier said than done, but not impossible by any means. Crewmates will always be suspicious of other players at the start of a round. As the game goes on, the ones who make it further in will likely trust those that they’ve been around the longest.

It’s important to be patient as an impostor. Going in for the quick kill at the beginning of a round might be tempting, but it’s important to play the role of crewmate as well. Having one of two players around you at various times will give you an alibi and might help you in discussions.

9 Pay Attention To The Taskbar

Simply running around the map and checking in on various crewmates will draw too much suspicion. Staying around other players is important, but pretending to do your tasks is key when deceiving your opponents.

The taskbar at the top left of the screen fills little by little as players complete the various tasks around the map. Though it is impossible for impostors to do these tasks, faking them isn’t. Simply go to a task you know shouldn’t take you so long, and wait until the bar moves. You can always bring this up as an alibi during discussions, as players around you will likely be paying attention to it as well.

8 Use Reactor Meltdowns and O2 Emergencies To Lead Crewmates Away From Bodies

Impostors are given various tools to confuse and unhinge crewmates’ tasks. Located on the left and right extremes of the map, the Reactor and O2 modules can both be tampered with, causing a game over for crewmates if not resolved within the given time limit.

If you kill a crewmate on one end of the map and need to separate yourself from the area, using one of these distractions is a great way of misdirecting the remaining crewmates while possibly giving yourself an alibi. The only downside to this is that both of these events can be bypassed should a body be discovered.

7 Self-Reporting

It’s something of a risky move, but self-reporting can be a useful tool, though not something that impostors should push their luck with. Just like crewmates, impostors can report a dead body when it enters their field of vision.

There are a few reasons as to why you might want to try this out. Depending on how you sell it, this might be a good way of throwing crewmates off your trail. It also gives you the opportunity of placing the body in another room, which might further draw suspicion away – though impostors should be careful with this strategy, as putting the body in the vicinity of more than one crewmate will likely lead to their ejection.

6 Jump On The Bandwagon

Discussions can be hectic when players get fired up. There are a number of ways impostors can try to survive through these, but one of the most efficient is to let other players do the talking.

Of course, the passive approach shouldn’t be taken when the blame is being shifted towards you. Instead, it’s better to wait and see which crewmates are under the microscope and fuel the fire. But don’t be too aggressive, as that will likely give you away down the road.

5 Watch Out For Cameras

Every map in Among Us has cameras placed in various locations, with a security room that all players can interact with. While impostors can use this to get a sense of who’s where, crewmates can very well use them to have a front row seat of a sloppy kill.

It’s best to kill away from cameras when you can. But remember that they’re not usually monitored. If the light isn’t on, you’re free to do whatever you have to.

4 Always Make Use of Vents

Venting is something only impostors can do, so as with almost everything that comes with being an impostor, it’s a bit of a risk. But that just means that players need to be mindful of when and where they vent.

Venting around can quickly put some distance between you and a body. It can also be used to find isolated crewmates and go in for the quick kill.

3 Take Advantage of Blackouts

Creating chaos in Among Us is an impostor’s best shot at coming away with a win. While there are multiple ways of doing this, one of the most efficient would be cutting off the power.

Crewmates will get a considerable reduced field of vision while impostors still see things normally. This is ideal for both taking crewmates out in plain sight, and finding the perfect kill in the midst of all the panic.

2 Split Crewmates Up

It goes without saying that killing someone alone is better than doing it with someone around you. In order for this to happen, impostors must often split crewmates up.

Closing doors, causing blackouts and meltdowns will do the trick nicely. Of course, players still manage to stick together at times, so it’s important to keep an eye out for anuy opportunity that might come your way.

1 Don’t Vote Too Eagerly

Who you vote for can be incredibly telling during discussion periods. It’s important to pay attention to what other players are saying and get a feel of who they’re suspicious of and where they’re leaning.

More conservative players will likely skip vote if there’s little to no information to go off of. It’s best to follow what they’re doing in these situations as to not give yourself away. Voting too eagerly with little evidence will put a good deal of scrutiny on you that you could do without.
