While the little crewmate beans may make the game look adorable, Among Us is all about psychological mind games, manipulation, and sometimes, gut feeling. Whether players know it or not, even something as seemingly insignificant as a crewmate's look can easily affect the way others perceive them.
When it comes down to the wire and two opposing parties are butting heads with no real leads about who the true imposter is, players may just go with their instincts. Cosmetics may seem like an innocent wardrobe choice but sometimes, they can also lead to one's downfall. Here are some of the most sus cosmetic items in Among Us that scream "imposter".
8 Crewbo The Clown (Skin)
Crewbo the Clown is a cosmetic skin item that was obtained in the Trick Cosmicube for 150 Pods. It is a purple outfit with a frilled red collar to (as its name would imply) resemble a clown. While clowns are typically associated with fun children's parties, balloon animals, and laughter, there is one thing that keeps most people second-guessing their clown crewmate's intentions: coulrophobia, aka the fear of clowns.
It's no secret that clowns have a bit of a reputation for achieving the exact opposite reaction they strive for and scaring others instead of bringing them joy. Beware, crewmates; Crewbo may be a wolf in sheep's clothing (or rather an imposter in clown's clothing).
7 Crewmate Suit (Hat)
The Crewmate Suit is one of the most minimalist accessories, but what it implies is where the suspicion arises. The Crewmate Suit is a free hat that looks like a simple zipper, creating the illusion of the player wearing a costume, rather than actually being one of the other bean-like crewmates.
Wearing this hat may seem like a tongue-in-cheek costume choice but in reality, it sends a message. The Crewmate Suit is essentially the cosmetic equivalent of outing oneself as an imposter, alerting others that a player is not what they seem to be. The Crewmate Suit hat comes off as secretive and may cause others to point fingers right from the beginning of the game.
6 Police Officer (Skin)
Among Us is all about mind games and tricking others. Wearing the free Police Officer skin creates a sense of authority for a player, making them automatically appear as the "good guy".
However, part of the manipulative mind games is utilizing reverse psychology. The Police Officer skin can be seen as a cunning attempt to appear as the lawful authority of the group; while in reality, the player with the skin equipped is the one playing imposter. Pair this skin with the Policeman-Officer hat and crewmates will definitely accuse a player of trying too hard to seem innocent.
5 Plagued (Visor)
The Plagued visor is a free cosmetic for all players available during Halloween. It is clear that the Plagued visor was based on the plague doctors in medieval times, trying to scare both the plague germs and (unintentionally) other people away.
Wearing the Plagued visor is grounds for suspicion just off the basis of its incredibly dark origins. The medieval times and plague doctor masks are always associated with fear and death; its presence in Among Us is no exception.
4 Spooky Woods (Nameplate)
Nameplates may be something that everyone takes for granted, and most players may not put much thought into when picking one out. However, they still may have an effect on how a group of crewmates decides to vote.
During the voting/meeting screen, all players are displayed, along with their nameplates. The Spooky Woods nameplate can be purchased for 50 Pods via the Trick Cosmicube. This spooky little nameplate may give other crewmates a bad impression of players simply because of its eerie and mysterious vibe. Remember that nameplates are shown every time a meeting is called and can have a big effect on other crewmates in the long run.
3 Scream Mask (Hat)
The Scream Mask may be a hat cosmetic, but it covers the player's face along with their head as it also comes with a hood. The Scream Mask is a free hat cosmetic that is based on the famous Ghostface killer from the Scream franchise.
This particular cosmetic doesn't really need any real explanation about why it's seen as incredibly suspicious. Ghostface is a terrifying murderer in the Scream franchise, so it would only be natural for others to quickly point fingers right away. Pair this with the Scream robes and be prepared to be voted out without any time to explain.
2 Bedcrab (Pet)
The Bedcrab is a pet available for 30 Stars in the Bedcrab Pet Bundle. Perhaps the Bedcrab in Among Us is rather cute, but its origins are a bit more unsettling since it is based on the terrifying headcrabs from the Half-Life series.
While most of the other pets in Among Us are cute and cuddly, the Bedcrab stands out as a dangerous alien enemy. Anyone that would befriend the terrifying Half-Life half spider, half-crab headcrab is sure to be bad news themselves.
1 Great Goalie (Visor)
The Great Goalie visor is a free cosmetic that is obtained during Halloween. While it is a simple hockey mask, it's likely that it is a reference to Friday the 13th's famous antagonist, Jason Voorhees. However, even without knowing the Friday the 13th reference, the Great Goalie visor is still incredibly evil-looking on its own.
While it could be written off as a simple costume choice, often time the obvious answer is the correct one; and the one dressed like a spooky killer is indeed the one doing the killing.
