Among Us inarguably is one of 2020's biggest hits. Between late August and late September, Among Us climbed from negligible player counts to around sixty million users. It's the picture of viral success. Even approaching ten months later, Among Us remains a deeply rooted cultural phenomena among online gamers. There's perhaps no better evidence of that than a recently completed eBay sale. Someone apparently sold a chicken nugget shaped like an Among Us crewmate for $99,997.

The eBay listing is exactly what it sounds like. eBay user polizna listed a chicken nugget uniquely shaped like Among Us' awkward astronaut crewmembers, replete with a rounded space helmet and stubby legs, for auction. It's even sourced directly from McDonald's as part of a 10-piece order included with the company's BTS Meal promotion. The auction then closed on June 4 at 8:00 am after having received over 180 bids. The winning bid promised a cash prize of nearly $100,000.

While it's absolutely possible that there's a wealthy (or irresponsible) Among Us megafan out there willing to pay $100,000 for a piece of fried breaded processed chicken that's sort of shaped like a crewmate, there's a more likely scenario. That scenario being that Among Us fans saw the eBay auction as the meme it is and artificially inflated the bids with no intention of following through with payment. In other words, it's a fake bid.

There is some evidence that the winning bidder is genuine. Their account is semi-active on eBay and has made several bids over the past 30 days. eBay keeps most account information private for bidders, but does provide some vague information. For example, the winning bidder is known to have bid on some headphones, a Camaro-related product, and some other odds and ends. Of course, it might be worth abandoning an active eBay account to avoid paying $100,000 for a chicken nugget.

Among Us developer Innersloth even joined in on the fun. The official Among Us Twitter account linked to the chicken nugget auction a few days before it wrapped up. At the time, the auction was already up to almost $35,000 and was a meme within the game's community. "I don't know hot to feel about it??" admitted the account, before acknowledging, "but also??? I want it." It can probably safely be assumed that Innersloth did not ultimately win the chicken nugget, though Innersloth could very likely afford it with ease, too.

It's unclear if verification of the Among Us chicken nugget being sold will ever be provided, but regardless of what's happened, it has been a fun weird thing to watch. For Among Us fans at home jealous they don't have a crewmate-shaped chicken nugget, feel free to buy a 10-piece meal and just shape a normal nugget into a crewmate with bites. It's just as fun and doesn't cost $100,000.
