Frictional Games has officially announced Amnesia: The Bunker, a new semi-open world horror game that's set to launch for PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X in March 2023 as a day one Xbox Game Pass release. Frictional Games rose to prominence as one of the premiere horror game developers after its groundbreaking Amnesia: The Dark Descent game launched in 2010, a title that can be credited with helping revitalize the horror genre at a time when its biggest franchises were embracing a more action-oriented approach.

After wrapping up Amnesia: The Dark Descent, Frictional moved on to make the sci-fi horror game SOMA in 2015 and Amnesia: Rebirth in 2020. Frictional's games have been notable for giving players little to no means of defending themselves and for their physics-based puzzles. Amnesia: The Bunker seems like a natural evolution of the games that Frictional has made so far, and it will be interesting to see if it lives up to the high expectations set by its previous titles.

Amnesia: The Bunker is described as a semi-open world game. In it, players take on the role of a French soldier trapped in a World War 1-era bunker that is apparently filled with otherworldly monstrosities. The game will retain the Amnesia franchise's physics-based puzzles, with players having a number of ways they can tackle each challenge that's put in front of them. Notably, Amnesia: The Bunker will actually allow players to fight back against the monsters, as they have access to a gun this time around, but there's still the option to sneak through the whole game if one would rather do that instead.

It's notable that Amnesia: The Bunker is skipping PS5 and releasing as a day one Xbox Game Pass game. Previously, the Amnesia games appeared on PlayStation consoles first before jumping ship to Xbox. However, that dynamic has changed recently, with all of Frictional's Amnesia games currently available on Xbox Game Pass. When Amnesia: The Bunker launches for Game Pass in March, horror fans should be able to play through the entire series with their Game Pass subscription.

Amnesia: The Bunker's March 2023 release date is solidifying the month as a big one for fans of the horror genre. Besides Amnesia: The Bunker, Capcom has confirmed that the highly-anticipated Resident Evil 4 remake is also launching in March, so horror fans have a lot to look forward to early next year.
